⟡So High School⟡

(John Walker x Reader)
Summary: You and John have been together (sort of?) for a few weeks. You're still a little unsure on where you stand.
Word Count: 1.5k
Notes: (Set after the events of Thunderbolts*, fluff fluff fluff, kissing, relationship talk (that goes well!) again John is a bad flirt and a little dumb (but we love him), reader is a New Avenger/Thunderbolt)
a/n: And she rises from the grave with another manic Walker fic. This one can also be read as a continuation from Crush and Touch or alone!

One thing you’ve learned about John these past few weeks; he is the least subtle man alive.
On one hand, he has successfully managed to keep the two of you secret from the team. The group was your closest friends, but you didn’t want them to know just yet, especially so early on. On the other hand, you almost constantly get caught, and 90% of the time it is his fault.
Like the time where you were making out in his room and you managed to jump away and hide under the bed just in time for Alexei to barge in with his newest marketing ploy. Or when you were cuddling on the couch watching some old action movie when Bob suddenly decided to join you and John had to grab a pillow to hide his hard-on.
If the two of you were alone together in a room for 10 seconds or more (you’d started doing countdowns in your head), John would pounce and immediately shift from the cocky brash soldier to the surprisingly sweet and very touchy version of himself that he kept for you.
You liked this John a lot. You hadn’t had a proper talk about your relationship since you’d slept together for the first time, but you knew you wanted more. Yet every time you thought to bring it up, John was distracting you with a kiss or with his arms around you and you forgot what you meant to be talking about. He had a tendency to draw your attention elsewhere very quickly.
Like now, as you sat next to him in the truck, staring at his hands while he polished his gun. The way his rough hands managed to manipulate the metal so delicately, the callused hard earned from years of fighting, the little vein that ran along his left hand down to his knuckles.
John caught your staring, giving you a small but smug grin. You nudged him playfully, small enough that the others wouldn’t think anything of it.
“Alright.” Bucky called from the passenger seat, where his vibranium arm was presently gripping the handle above his door to keep from being tossed around by Alexei’s driving. He’d begged to drive the truck the moment he saw it (“I had limousine business! I am most qualified!”) leaving the rest of you to suffer through his erratic technique.
“Again, this is just a recon mission. We’re checking out this place for any potential Hydra evidence, taking it with us and leaving. No fighting. Got it?” he turned to look directly at John for that line.
“What?” John shrugged, as if he did not run into fights at every opportunity. You weren’t sure yet if it was stupidity, bravery, or suicidal tendencies. That was a question to address once you’d figured out if you were even dating the man.
“Ava, you’re with me. Yelena, with Alexei-”
“YES!” the Russian man yelled from the driver’s seat, the car speeding up as he stepped on the gas in excitement. In the backseat, his adoptive daughter covered her face with embarrassment.
“That leaves you two together.” Bucky gestured between you and Walker. “Keep him alive, alright?” you nodded, while John murmured a weak dissent. You flashed him a smile as Bucky turned away, one he returned, secretly glad to have been paired with you.
The team was investigating an old Hydra experimentation base, seeing if they’d left any potential evidence of their crimes. Ever the Congressman, Bucky insisted on trying to use the law before they went straight to punching. Even then you could tell he was straining on missions as boring as these.
Still, it was nice to have some alone time with your- boyfriend? Partner? Romantic interest? Still figuring that one out.
“Anything in there?” John shakes his head as he slams yet another empty file cabinet. You’d been sent to the basement to sort through any potential information left behind. Unfortunately, Hydra was good at cleaning up after themselves.
“Fuckin’ Hydra.” John drops himself into a nearby rolling chair, squeaking with age as he sits. “Can’t just make our lives easy and leave evidence everywhere.”
“No files, but human experiments all over the place.” you joke as you slide onto the desk opposite him. He spins to face you, wearing that grin that he reserved for moments like this. Quiet, not urgent.
“Not now, John.” you muttered as he scooted over to you.
“What? I didn’t do anything.”
“I know exactly what you’re gonna do.”
“What was I gonna do then?”
You tilt your head at him. “You act stupid when you’re horny.”
John chuckles, incredulous, a laugh turning into more of a grimace. “Do I?”
You pull him to you, pulling the chair in fully next to where you sit on the desk. “Yeah, but it’s cute.”
You could swear he blushes a little under that damn helmet-hat of his. “It’s been a while for me.”
You furrow your brow. “Since what?”
He sighs as he unclips his helmet, pulling it over his head. “Since I’ve had to… flirt, I guess? To try? The last time was in high school, and we saw how that turned out.”
“Oh.” you whisper.
“Yeah.”
He plays it off jokingly, but you know how things ended with Olivia still hurts him. He fucked up and bad. He tended to wallow in his fuck-ups rather than work to make things better, which is exactly why she left.
“You’re not fucking this up, John.” you reach for his hand, “I like you. A lot. You can’t let the past dictate your future.”
He snorts, but grasps your hand back. “Did you get that line from Bucky?”
“Alexei, actually.” you smile as he presses a kiss to the top of your hand, soft and reverent.
He takes it in his other hand as well, cradling it like it’s something precious to behold. “When I’m with you, I just get so…stupid?” he trails off.
“You’re not stupid John, I was joking-”
“No, I do. When I look at you I feel like I’m a dumb high schooler on the football team again, and I just forget all my adult skills and go back to dumb flirting tactics.” he runs a thumb over your palm, tracing small shapes into it. “I really do like you. A lot. I’m just, I’m not good at this.”
It clicks for you; the secrecy, the affection at every opportunity, the way it seems like his brain flies out the window when he’s trying to flirt. John Walker, Avenger, has the seduction toolkit of a high school jock.
You can’t help it, you laugh. John holds a pained smile, equal parts trying not to laugh and a little embarrassed. “John, you’re plenty good at it.” you bring your other hand to his cheek, one of his immediately joining it. “I like you. Because you are very cute when you get flustered and try to flirt, because you are brave and determined, and because you are a good man.” you stand and lean in to press a kiss to his forehead. “I can’t guarantee you won’t fuck up, and I can’t gurantee I won’t fuck up, but if we do we figure it out. We fuck up together.”
John leans into your touch, drawn into the warmth and safety of it. “Now that’s a slogan. We fuck up together.”
“Don’t tell Alexei, he’ll put it on a t-shirt.” you giggle, as John pulls you down for a kiss. His beard scratches against your face, a feeling you’ve come to love, warm lips soft and gentle against yours.
“And if it makes you feel better, I have a really stupid question I’ve been meaning to ask you.” he nods, smiling shifting to a look of concern. You shut your eyes, embarrassed. “Are we dating?”
John’s quiet. Bad sign. You open your eyes, and he just looks confused. “I didn’t know we had to establish that.” he chuckles softly.
“I know, and I feel dumb asking, but I didn’t want to pressure you into anything and I didn’t know what you wanted-”
He cuts off your rambling with another kiss, this one more intentional, more important. He cups your face in his hands as you wrap your arms around his neck, deepening the kiss.
All too soon, he pulls away, his smug smile back on his face. “I want you.” he gives you another quick kiss. “Is that what you want?”
“Yes.” you answer, too quick for your own dignity, but you couldn’t care less at this point. John smiles, his arms moving to your hips as he pulls you into his lap, causing his chair to wheel backwards, eliciting a squeal from you.
He laughs as you slow down, pulling you in and kissing you once again. It’s bliss, till suddenly you hear Ava’s distinct accent calling your names from somewhere nearby.
You all but throw yourself out of his lap, dusting yourself off as he laughs, rising from his chair.
“You are gonna get us caught one day.” you chide, although you don’t fight it as he brings his hands back to your waist.
“What, is it my fault for wanting to be affectionate with my lovely girlfriend?” he presses a kiss to your temple before you bat him off, him raising his hands in defeat.
God, your boyfriend is an idiot.

a/n: Every time i write this man I think I'm hallucinating bc how is this the same mf from TFAWTS. Anyways I hoped you enjoyed! If you like my fics pls feel free to request anything (give me inspiration pls) or just reblog or like! Anything is appreciated. As always, it ain't much but it's honest work :)

Where There's Smoke, There's Fire
Modern!AU Smoke x Annie
- Shea Buttah Bakery Masterlist story masterlist - sounds // Stardust - Lester Young - warnings - Explicit Language - -
Annie admired the blue lacquer on her almond-shaped nails, recalling the sweet yet straightforward request she’d gotten to polish them that color. The text had popped up the day before. So last minute—their date was tonight. But, for him, she didn’t mind so much. She’d make something shake somehow. Lucky for the both of them, her nail tech was able to squeeze her in the same day. The striking cobalt complimented her warm brown skin beautifully. Surely it would look just as good against whatever parts of him he wanted her to touch.
He couldn't wait to see her; that was the other part of the text. She couldn't wait to see him either. It had been an entire week since they’d been able to let loose with each other. She took a bite of her sandwich, courtesy of her special someone. It was a slow Friday, though they’d just had a companywide meeting that wasn't the easiest to sit through. Sales were on a bit of a downward trend. And, though it wasn't necessarily anything abnormal, their boss, the owner, was always paranoid about any decline.
“Hiiii—ugh, what’s that?” Her coworker Pearline’s big smile turned sour once she’d entered her office. “I was coming to see if you had some jollof or something.”
Annie couldn't help but laugh. “Nah, not today.”
“Awww.”
“You didn't bring anything? I got extra. It’s not jollof, but it’s still pretty good.” She bit into the chicken club, pointing down to the other half still wrapped in front of her.
“Yeah, I ate already. I’m just being greedy.” They shared a laugh as Pearline sat. It always tickled Annie how much Pearline could eat in contrast to how tiny she was. “Thank you, though.”
“No worries. So, you ok? I know you don't usually fare too well when the meetings get a little strict.”
“No!” She’d leaned over onto Annie’s desk with the most intense whisper, wide-eyed and dead serious. Annie laughed again. “I was just about to ask if I could chill in here until I get my feet back together.”
“Yes, you can stay.”
Pearline may have succumbed to her emotions every single time things got tense, but her work never suffered. Annie was especially grateful since they worked on the same team.
“As a matter of fact, do you have dinner plans for tonight?”
“None that I know of. Why?”
“One second.” Annie picked up her phone and dialed her mom’s number. “Hey, Ma, what you doing?
“Hi, Annie. Are you calling to cancel?”
“Ma. No, I’m not calling to cancel. I was actually calling to ask if I could bring a colleague to dinner tonight.”
“Oh, yes, sure. That’s no problem.”
“Ok, good. This greedy girl at my job loves your food,” Annie joked, looking directly at Pearline. Drop-jawed, Pearline glared back while Annie’s mom giggled in her ear at the compliment.
“How sweet. Yes, bring her. There will be plenty to share.”
“Alright, Ma, Thank you. I gotta get back to work. I do have to leave dinner early tonight, but I will be there.”
“Aniola!”
“I know, I know. I’ll make it up to you and dad, I promise.”
“You're becoming like a stranger. I’m concer—”
Annie took the phone from her ear, not liking the direction their conversation was heading in. Especially not during what was left of her lunch break. “Ok, love you, Ma. See you in a little bit.” She ended the call with a sigh, knowing she would have to hear more of it later. “Now, you can have all the jollof your lil heart desires.”
Pearline lit up. “For real? I’m coming to dinner?”
“Yes. My mom loves feeding folks. And, whatever you do, please don’t turn down any food.”
“What? That will not be a problem.”
In the midst of Annie’s laughter and Pearline’s celebration, their boss passed by and stuck his head into the room.
“Am I interrupting?”
Pearline froze. His presence was like that. Quiet, but big. Heavy. Felt down to the bones. He was also quite stoic, but something about him felt warm. To Annie anyway.
“Uh, no,” she said, shaking her head. “I’ve just invited Pearline to dinner with my family tonight. Is everything ok?”
“Yeah. I just wanted to drop off your five year plaque.” He walked in and held it out to her. “Congratulations.”
“Oh. Yeah. Thanks.” Her anniversary hadn't even crossed her mind. She took the plaque from his hand, reading the short message thanking her for her many contributions over the years.
“Your bonus will be reflected in your next paycheck.” Ears pricked, Annie looked up from her award. “We appreciate you around here. The machine wouldn’t run half as smoothly without you.”
“Awww. Thank you, Elijah.”
He nodded. “Alright, I’ll leave you to it.”
He was almost out of the room when Annie stopped him. “Hey, um… do you like Nigerian food?”
“…I’ve only had it once, but I did enjoy it.”
“Then you should come tonight, too. My parents are lovely hosts.”
Pearline, whose usually boisterous self had remained as quiet as a church mouse, almost reacted, but she caught herself.
Elijah was a little skeptical. In a couple seconds, he’d already thought up a few reasons why he should decline. For one, he already had plans for the night. He’d also never accepted any invite to anything from any of his employees. But he knew he couldn't pass this up. “Ok… I will. Thank you.”
“No worries. Hopefully you can handle spice.”
“I handle it just fine.”
“Alright.”
Annie would bet her bonus that she’d caught the faintest grin on his face on his way out. She smiled to herself. As soon as he was out of earshot, Pearline turned to her with a very apparent frown.
“Why did you invite him? He’s the reason I need to decompress in the first place. Did you forget he just yelled at us because his sales are slightly lower?”
Annie laughed. “He did not yell.”
“He might as well have.” She looked back to make sure the coast was still clear. “He’s mean as a rattlesnake.”
“He’s stern, but he’s not mean. To be fair, this is a pretty substantial business he’s running here. That must come with some stress.”
“Mhm.” Annie laughed again as Pearline’s eyes rolled. “Have you ever seen him smile? You were just smiling at him and he didn't even give you one back. Not even after your invitation.”
“Fair, but he was still doing a kind gesture. He’s always helpful if someone’s having trouble. Our pay is amazing. And it’s pretty lax here, too. No one hangs over your shoulder, micromanaging you to death.”
Pearline had to agree, but she hated every second of it, hanging her head with an exaggerated sigh.
“Trust me, girl, I've had some awful bosses. He’s a man of few words and, no, he never smiles,” a little giggle slipped through, “but I think he cares.”
“Ugh… I guess you’re right. You always talk me off the ledge.”
“At this point, I’m about to board up the damn window.”
“Oop!”
A laugh buzzed past Pearline’s lips, and she threw her hand over her mouth way too late. It was so quiet in the building, which only made it funnier. In a pitiful attempt to hold it together, Annie put her head down on her desk as they silently died in tandem. She looked up just in time to see a tear fall onto Pearline’s cheek and she lost it. She sprang up and spun her chair around, slapping her hand against her knee. It was getting harder and harder for her to stay halfway civil. Pearline had to go.
“Get out.”
“My break is over anyway. Bye.”
“And close my door.”
She disappeared and Annie was wiping her eyes when she caught a notification on her phone just as her screen was going dark. She got the rest of her giggles out and went to check it, but decided to finish the last few bites of her lunch first, thinking it would be her mom.
It was her beau.
Wear your hair up darling. And I wanna see that ass in a skirt. Show off all that pretty shit for me
She smiled down at her phone. Before she could stop herself, she was biting her lip.
i can do that
You know what ima do?
i got an idea but tell me anyway
She sat with bated breath, knowing he was about to mess her up. She could feel her body warming already.
Ima fuck you so good mama. I gotta let you feel how much I miss you
Just like that, her heart was about to jump out of her chest.
i miss you too baby
I want that pussy so bad I can already feel you gripping me. I can hear those sweet sounds you make when I’m sucking on your clit
Yearning dropped into the pit of her stomach and she squeezed her thighs together, trying her best to quell it. Of course that wasn’t enough. She looked up to make sure no one could see her falling apart. Damn those walls for being made of glass.
Smoke you know i’m at work. got me throbbing under this desk ife mi (my love)
Don't worry ima see bout that tonight
She put her head back on her chair and closed her eyes, sighing frustratedly. He had her so wet. And she still had half a shift left to work. She was also due back on the clock soon.
fuck my break is almost over, but wait until i get my hands on you
I’m ready
good. i got a little request for you too
Yeah?
leave your suit on. i wanna undress you myself. then i’m swallowing. every. inch!

Okay, after that last Everything Is Alright chapter, I NEED a Senator Shockwave update when you find time and inspiration.
Take care of yourself, love you, and don't work too hard.
Sure!

The Worst Is Yet To Come Pt 6
Senator Shockwave x Reader
• “No, see, it’s just a micro drone,” he says, leaning to gently nudge your arm down with a servo when you act like you’re about to swat the tiny thing. Though compared to you? It’s really not that small. “If it’s okay? I just, you’re a whole new species. I’d love to document our interactions, but if it bothers you, I won’t.” And you huff out a breath, face upturned to watch the drone.
• Grimacing, because yeah, you’re the alien here, you reluctantly nod. “It’s fine,” you say. While you’d rather not be recorded, you’re not sure you can trust how kind he seems. And until you are sure, you’d rather keep on his good side. Glancing at that toothy monstrosity in a jar, you shiver. Definitely have no desire to get shoved in a jar of formaldehyde. Trying to ignore the drone hovering, you look around. Have no idea what the equipment around you is, but you have a suspicion. Especially when you notice some delicate, floral looking dead things about your size pinned like butterflies to a board. “Are you a scientist?”
• “I am,” he says, reaching to open a drawer and pull out a clean polishing cloth, offering it to you. And you don’t take it, little fingers curling under into fists as you won’t even look up at him. “I can see you shivering, little one.” Finally, you reach out to take it, pulling it close. But you won’t meet his optics. Understandably skittish if what you’ve said is to be believed. Doesn’t claim to know every sentient species, but one capable of creating something equivalent to a ground bridge? He should have heard of humans.
• “Are you going to dissect me? Pin me to a specimen board or stick me in a jar?” Not sure why you ask, because if he was considering those things, he probably wouldn’t admit it. And you don’t mean to say them, but you babble when you’re scared and you’ve been terrified since the gate malfunctioned. Just want to curl up and have a good cry, eat something, and sleep for a day. But you’re scared to.
• “Why would you think that?” He asks, but he follows your stare. And he vents softly, reaching out to offer you a servo. “Mindless animals, I’d never do that to a sentient being.” But he’s not sure you believe that, lips thinning. Your alien face so uncannily Cybertronian, your expressions so easy to read. “You don’t have to believe me, but you do need me to survive here. Cybertron isn’t well-suited to organics. Without my help, you’ll starve unless you can metabolize metal or energon.” Finally, you reach out to lay a tiny hand on his servo. Trusting him and he smiles. There’s so much he wants to know. “Do you need fuel?” Smiling faintly when you reluctantly nod, he brushes his servo against your shoulder.

BE MY GIRL? | JEY USO

It’s been a while & I’m a little rusty so excuse any errors or mistakes…

“I want to be down
With what you're going through
I want to be down (down)
I want to be down with you (down with you)
No matter the time of day or night
It's true, I want to be down”
Brianna sung in the mirror as she moisturized her hair. She just finished her full self care shower which consisted of exfoliating, shaving, and doing her skin care. Once she moisturized her skin, she got dressed in her matching red pajama set and began working on her hair.
Kenya convinced her to let her do a sew in on her hair and she was in love with it. She was used to wearing wigs but the sew in was giving her a more natural and youthful look. She used the roller brush and tried her best to blow out her bundles like Kenya showed her until she was satisfied with the look.
As time passed she looked over at the clock and saw it was 7:10. She didn’t want to be that girl but she was waiting for Jey to call her. She ran into him in the gym earlier and he asked for her number. As much as it threw her off, she agreed and became excited when he said he would call her after practice.
As if he could sense her thinking about him, an unknown number flashed about her screen. Nervous, she let it ring a couple times before answering the phone.
"Hello." She spoke softly.
"Hey love, how’s your day been?" His deep voice spoke making her feel a little tangly inside. She couldn’t tell if his voice was deep because he was possibly sleeping or because they were on the phone but she loved it.
“Nothing much, finished up some homework, got something to eat, and did some self care stuff. Did you have a long day? I didn’t think you were going to really call me.” She told him and he instantly felt bad.
He really planned on calling her sooner but as soon as his body hit the bed in his dorm he was out a lot longer than he thought he would be. The first thing on his mind when he woke up was Brianna.
“My bad love. I was definitely going to call you sooner but practice ran until six and as soon as I got out the shower I took a long ass nap.” He explained to her.
“Thats okay, I can only imagine how hard practice was. I know I’m always tired after practice especially when I have homework.”
“That’s what you were doing when I called?” He asked her.
“No, I was doing my hair.” She shook her head as she laid against her baby pink pillows and crossed one leg over the other.
“What you do to it? I know it looks good.” He complimented her. One thing he enjoyed about Brianna was she always looked well put together. Her toes and nails were always freshly done in white polish or french tips. He could stare at her pink lips that were always moisturized or covered in clear gloss all day if he could.
“I washed it and I was going to put some flex rollers in them but I don’t have anywhere to go so I might leave it as is.” She shrugged her shoulders and looked down at her nails.
“You should let me take you out.”
“Why do you wanna take me out?” She giggled into the phone when he sucked his teeth at her.
“Man, cause I’m feeling your pretty self. I like the energy you bring and I want to know more about you.” He told her.
“You’re so sweet. You asking me on a date?" She asked playing with the ends of her hair, twirling it around her fingers.
"Yeah, Brianna." He nodded his head as if she could see him.
"Wait, you have a game on Thursday, right?”
"Yeah why?" He asked.
"If you win your game on Thursday then you can take me out on Friday. How does that sound?” She smiled into the phone. If there was one thing her mother taught her it was to never give a man too much lean-way.
"Bet, so make sure your schedule is cleared cause ima’ have something planned for us.” He told her while trying to keep his composure.
“I just ask one thing of you.”
"And what's that?" She asked him.
"You gotta come to the game and watch me play. I want you to see for yourself how well I do when I’m challenged.”
"Mmh, that works for me. I’ll see you there.”
-
2 Days Later
“It’s so nice in here. You have good taste.” Brianna smiled at Jey as he held her hand and led her into the restaurant he picked out got them. He knew he was going to win the game so her set plans in motion as soon as he got off the phone with Brianna.
“Thank you.” I said as he held the door of the restaurant open for me.
“You’re good.” He spoke as we walked hand and hand over to were the severs were. He told them he had a reservation under his last name before we were brought over to a table.
“You did really good job tonight.” Brianna smiled as she sat across from him and took a look at the menu.
“I appreciate it. Did you enjoy the game?” He asked and she nodded her head. It was her first time attending a basketball game at the college and it was a lot funner than she thought it would be.
“How’s volleyball going?” He asked after the two put in their orders with the waiter.
“It’s really good actually! I’m getting along with the girls pretty well and we keep winning games so I can’t complain.”
“That’s what’s up. Do you plan on playing long term?” He asked wanting to know more about her long term goals.
“Not necessarily , it’s something I like to do for fun but not something I want to do forever. I want to be a physical therapist or personal trainer. She explained to him.
“That’s what’s up. I wouldn’t have expected that from you but I fuck with it.” He nodded his head.
“What do you want to do? Basketball?” She asked him the same question.
“Nah, not really. I mean it’s cool and everything but I’m still trying to figure it out.” He shrugged his shoulders at her.
“You have time to figure it out but you’re really good at it and I know you can go far.”
“I appreciate it love.”
They talked for a little while longer about any and everything but most of their time was spent with Jey making her laugh. She found his to be extremely funny and he enjoyed being able to make her laugh.
“Oh, I don’t think we ordered this.” Brianna spoke as the waiter sat a dessert down in front of her.
The waiter just smiled at her cluelessness before walking off to another table. Josh watched her look down at the writing on the plate before looking back up at him.
“You want me to be your girlfriend?” She asked him.
“Yeah, I know it hasn’t been that long, but I know what I want, and I never been the type to not act on what I want.” He spoke truthfully.
“Okay, I’ll be your girlfriend.” She nodded her head and smiled up at him. There was an overwhelming amount of emotions consuming her but everything felt right in the moment.
“It’s good?” He motioned towards the mini cheesecake as he pulled out his card to pay the bill and tip the waiter.
“Mmh, it’s my favorite even though I’m not supposed to be eating this.” She nodded her head.
“Why not?” He frowned.
“Because, I have to stay in shape. I’ve been slacking in the gym too.”
“Shit, I can’t tell.” He mumbled loud enough for her to hear as his eyes glanced over her body. Her face instantly turned red as she tried to hide the smile on her face but of course she couldn’t.
She was dressed in a pair of fitted jeans that showed off her long legs, a hot pink shirt that laced in the front showing a tiny bit of cleavage, and, sandals that showed off her bubble bath pink toes.
Kenya convinced her to step out her comfort zone and put on something a little different than what she would usually wear. Everyone knew Bri could dress but she never had to do or show too much to get that point across.
“Well, thank you but you’re an athlete so you know how it feels when your body isn’t on track with you. I’m new on the team so I have to be on point and show them how good I am.” She explained and Josh nodded his head.
“Nah, I feel you. I might have to come through and see you compete. See if you’re as good as you say.”
“I’m definitely as good as I say but you can see for yourself if you want.” She shrugged her shoulders.

Four Dates and a Fever
〚 Notes - I missed writing for Lena <3 〛

〚 Summary - Lena's worried after not hearing back from you after your date 〛

〘 Check Out My Masterlist! 〙

“Hey! You’ve reached Y/N’s phone, please leave a message after the beep!”
Your cheery voice played your voicemail message, just as it had done the three times prior when Lena had tried calling.
She sighed disappointedly, rubbing the bridge of her nose before taking a breath, “It’s me, I know you’re probably busy,” She began, trying to keep her voice neutral as she continued despite the worry creeping up in her chest, “Could you please call me back when you get a minute. I’m getting a little worried. If something is wrong, then can you-“
A shrill tone cut her off as the voicemail began beeping to signal its end. A moment later send her message began playing back through the phone as it waited for confirmation to be sent. Lena cringed internally, she’d always hated the sound of her own voice - especially when it was like this.
Lena may not exactly have been a social butterfly, but she understood social cues perfectly fine. She knew when she was being ignored or played. Left on read for days? They’re probably not interested. You should try to move on. Somebody keeps making up excuses to miss important events? Maybe its’s better to let them go and focus your energy elsewhere.
But this was different. Things had been going so well between the pair of you. You’d never ignored her texts before. Infact you’d always responded quickly, even when she knew you were busy with other things. It made her feel wanted. So, this behaviour was completely out of the ordinary for you. It wasn’t just a simple, low effort rejection. Something just felt wrong.
Last weekend, yourself on Lena had been on a date - your 4th date to be exact. It wasn’t anything too fancy, a nice meal followed by a long walk down by the harbour. You’d watched the sunset as the two of you talked about everything and anything until she eventually kissed you goodnight.
Lena could already feel herself falling for you and she was almost certain those feelings were mutual.
It was way she was so confused, and a little upset that over the past 3 days, all her texts and calls had gone unanswered. They hadn’t even been read, the little text box reading “Delivered” beneath her messages. If you weren’t interested any more than she’d much rather you tell her to her face rather than give her the silent treatment.
But you weren’t the sort of person to ever do that, she knew that. It was why, despite her better judgement telling her it was stupid, Lena found herself standing in the elevator to your apartment building with a small bouquet of fresh, colourful flowers held carefully in her hands.
The elevator dinged softly as it reached your floor, and Lena stepped out, her heels clicking lightly against the polished hallway floor. She still couldn’t quite believe that was doing this. Lena didn’t do the whole showing up unannounced thing. She respected space, boundaries, personal bubbles. But something about the silence was wrong…it wasn’t like you. Not after the way that night ended. Not after the way her name had lingered on your lips like a promise you meant to keep.
The bouquet felt heavier in her hands than it had downstairs, like each bloom now carried the weight of her own nervousness. She paused in front of your door, biting her lip, then raised a fist to knock.
Three soft raps.
No answer.
Her fingers hovered near the doorbell, but she hesitated. What if this really was a mistake? What if she was being too much, too soon?
The flowers rustled in her hands as she hesitated, readjusting her grip. No. She came this far, she wanted to see you, she had to know for sure. The bell was pressed, and Lena could hear its tone echo through the door.
She held her breath, hoping to hear the sound of movement inside. Yet there was silence. It was then that she realised that she actually had no idea if you were even home, for all she knew, she was waiting outside an apartment.
“Y/N? It’s Lena.” She tried a final time.
It was just as she was about to give up and go home - to tell herself this was a mistake and that she’d let herself care too much too fast - she heard it. A faint sound came from inside.
“It’s open.”
A voice. Your voice. It was quiet yet she’d made out the words clearly. Maybe a little too eagerly her hand moved to the door handle, pulling it down as she pushed the door open.
Lena blinked, her eyes having to adjust for sudden, unexpected darkness. The apartment was dim, curtains drawn closed and lights turned off, the only light coming from the flickering of your TV which was playing a movie which had clearly been long forgotten about.
“It’s me, I just- I haven’t heard anything from you in days… did I do something wrong? I thought we ended it well-“ She trailed off as she realised something was off. As her eyes adjusted to the lack of light, she slowly began to recognise your silhouette at the other side of the room.
You were curled up on the couch, barely awake. Your hair was a mess, skin pale and a thick sheen of sweat clung to your brow. A half-empty water bottle rested on the coffee table next to an almost empty box of tissues, while several used ones littered the floor nearby. You looked… awful. Lena forgot about the flowers, setting them on your table quickly before coming over to you.
You blinked sluggishly when she stepped into view, clearly trying to sit up but groaning softly as your body protested the movement.
“Lena?” You croaked, voice coming out in a strained, unhealthy sounding rasp, “Am I dreaming?”
The older woman shook her head fondly, “No, you’re not dreaming.”
“Wait-“ You sniffled, bringing the sleeve of your hoodie up to your face to cover a damp cough, the unhealthy sound making her wince a little in sympathy “Don’t come over here.”
It was a little late for that, Lena was already there. Her gaze softening as she knelt down beside the couch, reaching out to press the back of her hand against your forehead.
“Well, this answers the question of why you haven’t been responding.” She sighed sympathetically. “Flu?”
You coughed again, an unpleasant chesty sound. Lena reached out without a second thought, helping you to sit up as she rubbed your back until it had passed, “Black Death more like.” You wheezed, unhappily.
“I see.” She held back a small grin at your dramatics, “When did this come on?”
“Monday..? I think.” You rubbed your eyes, trying to think through the pounding headache behind them was proving to be difficult, “What day are we on..? God, I don’t know.” You gave up. You’d barely moved since you had been sent home ill from work at the beginning of the week. Moving took so much energy and that wasn’t even mentioning how dizzy you became whenever you mustered up the energy to stand.
Lena’s brows furrowed with quiet concern as she listened, taking in the raw rasp in your voice and the way your body sagged back against the cushions the moment it wasn’t being held upright. You looked completely wrung out.
“You poor thing,” she murmured softly, brushing a few strands of damp hair away from your forehead. “You’ve been like this all week? Alone? I wish you would’ve told me. I was worried I’d scared you away when you stopped responding.”
You nodded absentmindedly but let out a small gasp at the sudden realisation that you’d been completely ghosting Lena over the past few days. Guilt instantly seeping in. The gasp had sent you into a sudden coughing fit, choking through them as you tried to apologise.
Lena quickly moved into action to rub your back again, “Woah! Hey, hey, none of that. It’s nobody’s fault. I wouldn’t have answered my messages if I were in your condition either, seriously don’t start worrying about that. I’m just glad I came over when I did, okay?” She cupped your cheek gently once you’d finished coughing, her palm cool against your fever-hot skin.
A few seconds later you felt a water bottle be lifted to your lips, “Drink.” She said simply as you looked at her from behind the bottle. You did as you were told, the liquid feeling good against your raw throat.
You weren’t sure if it was the fever making you lightheaded or just the fact that she was here, looking at you like you weren’t the disgusting, mucus-ridden mess you felt like - but it made your chest ache in a different way.
Lena moved to sit beside you, and you found yourself shuffling up close to her. She wasn’t saying anything, and you appreciated that. The silence between you felt warm, comforting, not expectant or heavy. She could feel you shivering slightly beside her, despite the sweat that sat in beads along your forehead.
“Do you have any blankets?” She asked after a moment.
You nodded, “Yeah, in the bedroo-“ You made a move to get up but that was quickly stopped.
“Don’t be silly.” Lena’s voice was stern, and you knew this meant she would not be taking no for an answer, “Stay put, I’ll get it.”
And she did, returning a few minutes later with a thick brown blanket which she gently draped over your shoulders, letting you get comfy against it, “Thank you.” You murmured, fighting the urge to yawn when Lena settled back down, letting you lean against her as her arm came up to rest over your shoulders.
“I’m glad you came.” Your voice piped up again after a few moments of silence. Lena smiled, looking down at you, a certain sparkle of adoration in her eyes.
She couldn’t resist planting a soft kiss to the top of your forehead, “I’m glad I came too. I don’t like seeing you under the weather of course, but I have to admit seeing you all wrapped up and cosy is adorable. I’m kind of regretting the fact that I’ll have to leave.”
“You have to leave?”
Lena nodded, “You’ll be wanting to sleep soon, you’re exhausted, and you need to rest.”
“What if you didn’t?”
“Didn’t what?”
“Leave.”
Lena blinked, unsure of what you were saying, “You want me to stay?” She tried to keep the hopeful tone from her voice, but it was clear she wanted nothing more to stay here and be by your side.
You gave her a feverish smile, reaching up and cupping her cheek as you looked deep into her emerald, green eyes. You didn’t just see the love behind them, you saw the two of you and your life ahead together. It was a beautiful thing.
“Of course I want you to stay.”

The first chapter of can't commit to a thing is finally real and posted and I get to talk about it! spoilers for the first chapter below of course :)
First, writing process!
The first chapter being an introductory one instead of an opening scene was something I debated on for a pretty long time. Originally it was just the second chapter, and then Sova's POV would start further along in the story. I thought that created too much of a challenge with establishing both his backstory and the plot, because some of it is too dense to get through with the POV flipping around three people.
It was originally a Cypher/Sova fic (about a year ago, when i started writing it)! And a (lot) shorter. This and just off the key of reason were the same work at one point; The plot was more emotionally driven, but it still opened with Icebox, and Cypher needing to help Sova with his bloodthirst. I split it into two because I didn't think I could properly write their relationship developing over the course of the fic with it jumping from: tentative allies-disliking each other further-friends again-in a relationship. Felt kind of fragmented. Eventually I'll explain the whole original plot but it has some spoilers for can't commit to a thing so I'll save it for later :0
Sova's backstory as to how he became a vampire is very different from just off the key of reason; hopefully I can make that clear enough through the story, but his recruitment with Brimstone and Viper was something I decided on really late. Writing it meant I had to be concrete on how the Protocol worked in the early days, and usually I try to keep things vague (in my head, idk how much of it translates) on certain aspects of canon because there's so little content on what it actually looks like. I thought it would be a good introduction to how vampirism has altered Sova's character, though.
The details for how vampirism work are also fairly similar to just off the key of reason-- I just finally get to go more in depth with it in the context of the story. I hope to eventually share both the outlines for the story and the details for the AU. I've done a RIDICULOUS amount of research and refining for how the biology works, and I'm so excited to continue showing y'all through the story!! You WILL see me infodumping through Viper and Killjoy even it takes a bit to get there.
and finally, THANK YOU FOR READING!!! Seeing people's responses to just off the key of reason and all of my other fics is incredibly inspiring, and it's very reassuring to know I'm not just talking into the void abt my fic stuff :D I have a lot of fun writing valorant fanfic, and I hope you have just as much fun reading it!
#and sorry. about switching to a two-week schedule instead of my typical one week#i wanted to maintain it but i don't think i can aim for a 5k chapter every week with work and college classes already kicking my ass#especially not if i want them to be well-polished#but again thank you for reading :)#fic talk#cctt#cysova#vampire sova

Month 4, day 23
Snorb is finished!
BUT ALSO
I painted my nails :D

Still a lot of cleaning up to do (also you can see my messy desk), but that's mostly "let the nail polish set and then wash your hands" cleanup.
I'm really happy with how they turned out, messy or no :D Especially my right thumb, which is half gold, half purple, but since I painted the whole thing purple first and then did the gold on top of it the gold looks purple in the right lighting/at the right angle. Also that gold stripe on my blue left thumbnail is such Prav vibes lol
#the great artscapade of 2025#art#my art#blender#blender render#blender 3d#cycles render#cg fast track#procedural shader networks#nail art#nail painting#idk if I gave the polish enough time to set before I go to bed 😬#I mean I stopped painting them about an hour ago (took pics 15 minutes ago tho) and these are supposed to be quick set polishes so I HOPE s#but some of these are also laid on thicc (especially my right middle finger) so I may have sabotaged myself lol#oh well if it's all fucked up in the morning I don't mind#part of the reason I want my nails painted is so I stop chewing on them#they don't have to be pretty for that#pretty is just a bonus ;D#and if they're not all fucked up I'll put on a clear coat to protect them and make them last a bit longer#might even do that if they are all fucked up tbh#preserve my lessons learned or some shit :P

Hi hello.. i love your geats fanarts!!!
I just want to ask you something... what do you think of the idea that the 7 riders involved in making up the oneness form... also have a oneness version?
Like kamen rider buffa oneness or
Kamen rider tycoon oneness or
kamen rider lopo oneness
Just an idea i have... XD
Hi hi and thank you!!!! Glad you like them! <3
And mmmmm that is some good food for thought, actually!! If I come to concept them, I can see keeping most of the chest and shoulder pieces the same (that's how the buckles work in Geats after all) but give some small extras on the rainbow details — one thing for sure is that I'd give Buffa a longer rainbow mane lmao 🗣️
#And look— I won't promise because my ideas com and go so often in my head#but after i received that ask I doodled some ideas so maaaaaaaaaybe i'll polish them in the future#for now i have some g4vv wips and geats au i want to make concepts for too#especially the sponsor swap that was so well received sdfghjk#but i really appreciate the idea! the oneness for other riders really escaped me kjhgfdfghjk

Shakes and cries I wanna make Jackie parent hc designs but I can't because potentially one of them is a prevalent character now and her ass has not spoken a single line yet so I both know nothing and can't just start making shit up yet </3333
#rat rambles#oni posting#I hope alan shows up at some point I need to know what one alan stern is up to so badly#I mostly am hoping things stay relatively vague with the family drama but I would like a sense of what they're personalities are like#if for no other reason than wanting more proxy fuel for jackie character analysis#but alas there will likely be quite the wait until we get new story content again#which Im fine with to be clear I want them to take their time to polish things#especially since the last two dlcs were so close together#plus Id like to see some new bionic dupes before then as well#I assume new bionic dupes will come as we get more stuff but itd be comforting to see all that stuff not be locked behind a whole new dlc#Im fine with dlc exclusive dupes dont get me wrong I just don't want the oni team to build a situation in which the bionic boosterpack#starts to retroactively feel like an unfinished product due to basic things such as a decent dupe selection being locked behind other dlcs#I rly hope that new bionic dupes are sprinkled throughout different qol updates or something like that instead#other than that I have no real expectations for what comes next gameplay wise Im simply content letting the oni team cook#I just am also going to be a big baby abt wanting new lore already the entire time because I wanna draw alan nowwwwwww#I also need to know if jackie's maybe brother is older or younger than her this is so important#since I very first read oni stuff I have seen her as the youngest of 2 and I would rather have them shatter that image sooner than later#I still Want him to be older but I am very willing to accept my hcs being obligerated with jackie#the last time they did it it was entirely for the better and I trust that when they inevitably do it again it will also be for the better#that being said I do want to announce I take it all back abt wanting more joshua stuff Im too attached to my hcs let me have this#joshua is the one oni character where I just like fully let loose my ideas upon it would be so easy for it all it crumble into dust#and like I would adapt and be fine but I would rather get to keep the ever growing chunk of my oni playlist he takes up in tact#thankfully I feel fairly comfortable that most the relevant guys in the basegame story aren't going to be too much of a presence for now#we seem to be getting more focus on general worldbuilding and less on preexisting characters#most glaringly olivia has basically been a complete nonpresence in both dlcs so gar#nikola and ashkan both continue to be the offhand mentioned but outside of them the focus seems to be shifting towards new characters#in particular I find it fun that gossmann has been mentioned in both of the recent dlcs making me wonder if shes going to be smth of a#nikola like character for the upcoming dlcs#also please let b. boson be burt please please please please please I need my boy to be real#I'm inclined to say he also certainly is but there is a world where boson is a rando so I can only be so confident

Hm ok what's your favorite or a really cool worlbuilding thing you've done? For any fandom or original or even an unimplemented idea
Hmm well at least in the past decade, my big worldbuilding projects have mostly come down to three-ish stories: Other Side of the Gun, Adventures of Gæilo and Ethon, and Just Desserts
OSG was an Invader ZiM fancomic concept I started around 2013 to justify every single Irken headcanon I ever came up with lol - I never finished it, or even really started it, but I put a lot of time and energy into its roughs back in the day :)
^A stick figure recap of Ch. 1, inspired by - what else - the Vargas stick figure recaps lol
One that you can see over here is all the work I did for my DnD campaign, AGE! (Though its sideblog hasn't been updated in a while haha - the AGE tag over here works just as well) I basically homebrewed a pantheon and had an absolute blast designing all the gods and their forms before they became gods and even things like architectural differences in their churches and the BBEG and his motivations and just ah <3 Such a fun project :D
It also laid the groundwork for things like Pokemon Homestyle, specifically all my papercrafts! You can really see how I leveled up haha
And my latest has been Just Desserts! Even with less time under its belt, it's still pretty expansive, as evidenced by my icon and theme and the backlog lol, and it's the one I have the most AUs of! (Though OSG does come close actually haha) There are still some thorny details I'm trying to iron out, especially to do with the magic system, but all the characters and creatures and the fact that I made my own fighting minigame, ah, pleased! I've never been so happy with a sona before Charm! ♥ From the very beginning it's been so fun to work on and I still want to improve!
#Long post#There have been others of course - things like BunBonBop and TMatM and quite a handful of original species lol#I was also involved in an IZRP that got very in depth which is where Bar comes from actually!#As well as my brief stint into being a TGWDLM askblog lol soz to everyone over there ouq#And little stories like Karera no Kotogara and Yanderapy but those mostly set in cartoon-reality y'know?#No magic or sci fi there haha#Man looking back through the OSG stuff kinda makes me wanna unstore Ch. 0 - I've grown a lot since then!#To the point where it almost doesn't feel ''mine'' anymore haha - it has been almost ten years! Maybe to celebrate its anniversary :)#Also yeah if you look hard enough I've been in love with and inspired by Vargas for as long as I've known about it haha#AGE was so much fun <3 I would like to get back to it someday but picking back up after so long is hard!#I still hold all of them fondly of course ♥ Mar especially since they were the tipping point for me loving spiders :D#It's hard to believe Just Desserts is already four years deep! It still feels so new to me haha#I know I big up Charm and her design a lot lol but for me it really is exactly what I want <3 It's my perfect :)#I still really want to get into 3D modeling to make her as I originally envisioned her!#If I had the funds I'd absolutely commission someone but tbh I don't know many names on that side of art haha#I've also heard about people who give advice/brainstorming sessions for magic systems and I've been intrigued ever since :0#I'd love to sit down with someone and hash out Exactly how their magic works! It feels like it just needs a few more pushes!#Then again that's what I said about the TVAU outfits too haha ♪ Maybe it would all fall into place!#To the base question tho: I never know how to qualify ''implemented'' - does just putting it out there as a concept count?#Writing a story? Making a comic? A series? Polished? Completed?? Where's the line haha#I'm always so full of ideas but focusing on anything long enough to make it ''pretty'' is so hard for me still#I just keep creating never stopping haha

Rewatching bridgerton s1 since i first shotgunned it at the drop lol
Still so charming, the right side of campy in the context of regency, there’s some things that they were pretty heavy handed with but I can’t fault them, re things like having to make characters state their feminist agenda in awkward and broad terms, For The Casual Audience At Home Who Doesn’t Get The Genre
Still, my majorly unpopular opinion is that I don’t like Penelope at ALL lmao....... The reveal of who was writing the gossip rag rly shot my interest in the foot, and it took me a long time to pick up s2 bc of it, though I can at least appreciate that s2 did have a theme of ‘consequences’ for her, to some degree. It’s also the reason it’s taken me sooo long to rewatch s1, lmao, having to watch her ultimate act of cruelty, picking up her pen to play mean girl on anon and nearly ruining that girls life. Having to watch her pretend to befriend her all over again knowing what she’s going to do, in the end. Yuck!
dgmr, I actually think there’s a lot of humor in Penelope and Eloise, and can def appreciate them as two privileged white children going into their woke teen era for the first time, while still being a little selfish about it. It’s realistic. I think watching them grow apart bc Eloise was ready to start maturing in her beliefs, while Penelope wasn’t, was also an interesting direction to take that in, though I’ve got Thoughts about how it unfolded... Hopefully, in her season, she’ll grow up and I’ll enjoy the romance, even if I can’t forgive her for outing that girl’s business, whether she was trying to baby trap a Bridgerton or not!!
Anyway, my real takeaway from Bridgerton is that every single old woman in this show ATE. Watching the primary trio of older women in this show bring so much dynamic life to their characters is so enjoyable, they played them perfectly from the start, and the depth and weight given to them beneath being genre standard Matchmaking Matriarchs is so cathartic even tho I am literally a young person
#this isnt rly for anyone just waiting for something to finish#i could go on and on and on about it but anyway i am excited to get to s2#where they had the budget and slightly more subtlety for a more polished romance#ppl turned on s1 so fast bc the heat was searing in s2 but IT IS THERE FOR S1 I WILL WRITE ANOTHER POST BAOUT THIS LATER#i'm at the art gallery part... the establishment of the almost hand touch hold me.......#the fact that it happens every season isnt something i will ever take for granted itll snatch me every time#text posts#also i think penelope is well acted and a good idea just shakily executed#maybe ill write somethinbg about it someday but i dont want to poke the hive ik shes got fan#*fans#being an entitled wallflower type shes got hella fans on fandom sites LMAO#but i dislike that archetype whether its a man or woman#shame bc the actor is so cute and also made me lmao in harlots#shes literally beautiful and so i'm excited to see her in regencywear her mom doesnt pick out#hopefully they age them up or something.. it seems like they might part and reunite so maybe a timeskip?#but especially freshly rewatching s1 colin and penelope are SO YOUNG for the types of romance scenes we been getting#then again queen charlotte miniseries did keep her 17 and we had love scenes with her tho they were NOT LIKE s1 scenes lmao#but ughh thats a whole other topic and i'm just rambling dont get me started abt the intimacy direction in s1 vs later seasons#uhh ok later

I drew these for 2023, last year, as part of an intended silly set of 4, burned out and never finished the other two, so I'm posting them now for end of 2024 2025 a year late, before I forget again. lmao
Couple of OCs being egotistical re: the poisonous berry garland
#actually I'm posting these at AFTER midnight so I missed 2024 it's 2025 now#it's still 2024 somewhere!! it counts!!!#I'm ALSO burned out now#I am so burned out#these two are some of my most shit-stirrer little bastards the first one is an absurdly wealthy giant flirt#and the second one. well. don't worry about it. idk whose hand that is it's just some guy (the hard stare at Some Guy is intentional)#the framing is so high because I was originally going to include someone who is 6'6" because she would be the BIGGEST mistletoe gremlin#the fourth one was a couple that went canon lol like the OG WENT CANON one of the gang#I wanted to tweak these but I'm happy enough with them to just post them#it's been a year I'm probably not revisiting without a full redraw so may as well#they're not fully polished but were a painting exercise last year especially his jacket which is supposed to be a $$$ green velvet#man glaze really crunchified these in parts I added a close up because of that#olessan art#olessan's headworld#EDIT I FORGOT THE ALT TEXT AGAIN but I added it uwu

General masterlist | To Your Love That Smells Like Crazy - Series masterlist
Damian was territorial, dominant and temperamental since the family had known him. Maybe he was born like that, maybe he wasn't, they couldn't know, so, what they most hoped for was that those were just personality traits, maybe coping mechanisms, and the puppy would present as an omega or beta one day, and then maybe the hormones would make him calm down. It was a small possibility, but one could only dream, right?!
Well, those hopes were crushed when, at his fifteenth birthday, Damian woke up growling at the mix of strong alpha scents stinking his room, his territory, and started pacing inside there, not allowing anyone but the old beta Alfred to come in.
He calmed down after a couple of hours, came out of his room to eat breakfast, assessed and scented the rest of his territory (everyone's territory, really, the manor was the family’s home), and maybe humor his inner alpha by subjugating the rest of the pack. It didn't work, obviously, they were all mature alphas who went through puberty already and knew how to (mostly) manage conflict with a newly-turned alpha who still smelt like milk and was just overwhelmed with hormones.
After a full belly, it was decided he shouldn't have to go to school for the first few days (something the teenager was happy with), to learn to control his mood and impulses, visit a specialized doctor to be sure what kind of suppressants were better suited for his organism, and so he could go through his first rut in peace.
A few days later, Damian went back to school, nose itching from some not-so-pleasant alpha scents, some weak beta scents, some sugary omega scents, and a lot of milky scents coming from most students, especially unpresented puppies.
He wondered how adults live like this, if he would just get used to it, and it wouldn't bother him so much one day. One thing was to feel the smell of flowers or food, another thing was to feel people’s pheromones. But his train of thoughts were halted when he felt you.
Not even inside the classroom yet, but he could sniff you out and find you if he wanted to. Strong, yet suave, soft. Strawberries. And milk. It made his whole body shudder and tremble. Now he knew why his family occasionally asked where the delicious scent stuck to his clothes came from. Now he knew why alphas turned their heads and stared at you so much when you both were walking around. It was all you. His best friend.
Damian stared openly and unconsciously, while you made your way to him none the wiser and sat down at his side, and he almost got annoyed when, at first, you didn't seem to notice his new presentation, as if you didn't even acknowledge him as an alpha yet. But then you turned and stared at him strangely.
— Dude, why’re you staring so mu- Oh. — You blinked, finally having realized where the new musky scent was coming from. — You're lucky you smell good. My neighbor smells like feet.
When he came home, he announced he had an omega.
Obviously, that left everyone bewildered as to what he meant by that, it was impossible for during his first day back outside as an alpha, he already had a mate. But he didn't have to explain much for them to understand, the scent on his clothes was enough proof as to why he wanted you for himself.
After that, Damian invited you to hang out with him at the manor for the first time. It caused a reaction in everyone, and all of them were home, of course they were, Damian wanted to show off his future mate, and you had to meet the family, since he single-handedly decided you were going to join their pack already.
As you walked past each door on the way to Damian's room, everyone had a reaction.
The old beta and grandfather, Alfred, was very polite and nice, he smelt like tea. He smiled more freely with how sweet you were, amused by Damian's clear crush.
Next, you passed Dick by the gym, he smelt spicy, and his door was open, so he could peek better to satiate his curiosity when Damian's crush arrived, yet, he didn't expect to almost fall from his stretching position when he finally took a whiff from your sweet scent for the first time, instead of just the faint and weak thing that occasionally got stuck on Damian's clothes and hair. He managed to look mostly presentable even though he almost sprinted to the corridor to meet you. Dick was even more pleased to see you were beautiful, even in your modest school uniform. He forced himself to hold back and stay in the gym when Damian decided the interaction took long enough, and pulled you to keep walking.
Jason was next, he was in the library. His scent was thick. Woody. He coughed around his drink when he felt your scent, and Damian rolled his eyes at him. Jason’s whole body froze when he saw how soft you looked, clearly an omega. He noted that you looked older than fifteen, but Jason knew you were just a couple of months older than Damian, and you still smelled like milk. His attraction to you bothered him because he couldn't ignore your still-milky scent, and he was already imagining how you would smell like when you fully reached maturity. Your hair was shiny and looked soft, like clouds and cotton-candy. He wanted to stick his nose there and hug you. You looked the perfect company for a nap (and more). Damian quickly steered you away to keep walking.
Next was Tim, he was in his room, and he smelt like peppermint. He always kept the door closed, but during your visit, it was open wide, due to his curiosity to meet you, everyone knew that. Tim snapped his eyes away from his computer when he felt you, and stared at you wide-eyed when you appeared. You didn't even come inside, Damian didn't want to feel your scent coming off of Tim's room to haunt him every time he walked past that door for the next days. It would definitely make him want to kill his brother. Tim tried to burn your image to his brain to the smallest details. He noted the color of your nail polish, your earrings, the thing dangling from your backpack, the shine and rosiness of your lip gloss. Tim specially liked your soft-spoken voice, and it bothered him how polite, neutral and distant it was, because clearly you both didn't now each other, you were just there as Damian's friend, meeting his older brother for the first time, and just wanted to go hole up inside Damian's room as soon as possible to avoid the weird interaction.
Soon, your wishes came through, and you spent the next few hours there with Damian basically teaching you everything and doing your homework. It was a new behavior, he never did that out of instinct before, some people asking him for help would annoy him, others, like you, he would calmly help out of the hidden kindness in his heart, but he never took initiative before. You brushed it off as just new alpha behavior and just used his either gentlemanly or condescending behavior, if it meant you could gain things out of it and be lazy.
At dinner, you finally met his father. Bruce Wayne was the alpha of a pack full of alphas and a beta. His himbo and playboy persona gave you the impression that he wasn't the most dominant alpha around, but you were proven wrong when you felt his sandalwood aroma and saw his towering frame. His personality was the same you saw on the TV, though, pleasant like a TV host or just a popular guy. On the inside, he was fixated with you, ignoring your milky childish scent and your school uniform. He wanted you around the house more. God knows how much a bit more of softness could help the family’s dynamic. Maybe that was what was missing, an omega around the place. Like you. Actually, it could be you. He thought about convincing Damian to stick to living in the manor even after you were both married adults. Or you could be Bruce’s when you were of age. Wait, how old were you?
Alfred drove you and Damian to your place after everything was done, all the alphas with a heavy heart, bothered that you had to go, that you couldn't spend the night with them yet. Even if you were already theirs.

It took a lot to convince Damian to share you, but eventually, he begrudgingly agreed, they were a pack, after all, not just a family, they stick together, take care of each other and of each other's interests. Having something that wasn't just vigilantism in common would be good bonding for them, and the closer a pack could get, the better. That he knew. A pack sharing someone wasn't exactly unheard of either.
After that, Damian started inviting you to the manor more often. Almost every week you were there. Your parents started saying that Damian probably was interested in you, but you laughed it off, never thinking an alpha like him would be interested in an omega like you.
The family made the best of that time to get you used to them, to their dynamic, and to make you feel at home, safe, trustful. They also wanted your scent to get stuck everywhere. To get to know you. To learn everything about you. To make plans.
When Damian's 18 birthday came, you were already legally an adult too, and they invited you over, saying it was a birthday party. When you got there, the party consisted in only you and the family.
The conversation was nice.
They put drugs on your piece of cake that simulated an out of cycle heat.
It started with fatigue.
Then fever.
Your eyes got blurred.
You thought you were getting sick, and just planned on taking cold medicine when you got home.
The alphas were slowly coming closer and circling you, unnoticed.
You felt weird in your intimate parts, maybe you needed to pee.
You stood up, but your knees were weak, and you almost fell, if it wasn't for Dick, who caught you mid-air.
All scents became clearer when your eyes locked. You wondered what the look on his face meant, confused.
You felt their excitement, and arousal. And you felt something poking your thigh.
You felt your own underwear getting wet.

You asked them to take you home, but they denied. That made you feel antsy, so you tried searching for your phone to call your parents to pick you up, but you couldn't find it. It got especially hard when Damian picked you up and started walking up the stairs with you.
— It's okay, omega. You're okay with us. I’m going to take care of you… — Your hands trembled when he purred the word ‘omega’, mumbled those words, and nuzzled the side of your head with his nose, taking a deep breath from your sweet strawberry scent, and faint sex smell, due to the wetness between your thighs. No longer any hint of milk anymore, since you already reached maturity just a couple of months before him, and now he also didn't smell like puppy anymore.
— N-No… D-Dami… W-Where are you taking me? What a-are you gonna do? … I wanna go home… I’m not feeling good… — You whimpered and tried to weakly move out of his hold, it didn't work.
— You are home, beloved. And I’m going to help you feel better… With my knot. — Your eyes widened. — I will fuck you real good and fill you with my semen. I know it is your first time, it is mine too. But do not worry, your heat will make it painless and you will be satisfied with me. — You whimpered higher, your omega was preening, crying for a knot, your pussy squeezing hard, but your mind knew it was wrong. Clearly something was wrong. Why was no one helping? Couldn't they see you were caught by surprise with your heat and were saying no to him? Why were they looking at you like that? A cough coming from somewhere seemed to snap Damian out of it, like he remembered something. — Ah, right. And then, you will receive father’s, and my siblings' knots. I will go first since it’s my birthday and I claimed you first. — Damian blushed, despite his smug tone.
You cried for help, at first, it came out weak, as your omega didn't want to make something the alphas would disapprove of, but the closer you got to the room they designated for the moment, the reality of what was coming was overtaking your instincts. Especially after your belly started to hurt at being empty of seed.
The alphas only shushed you, and you helplessly watched as Tim handcuffed one of your hands to the bedpost as soon as Damian laid you down on the nest they made for you, and Dick and Jason each started taking your sneakers off. Bruce was standing a few feet away from the bed, Alfred at his side. The oldest alpha’s eyes were glued to your laid down figure, hungry and serious. Darker than you had ever seen. You've never been more scared of him before. He occasionally commented something to Alfred, that you vaguely registered as instructions, that also started being given to his children.
You weakly tugged at the handcuff and tried to sit up at the same time, but Damian pushed himself between your legs, and held you down by the waist. Dick and Jason held your legs open to accommodate him better, and your overwhelmed brain barely noticed their hands also rubbing your ankles and thighs. You've never felt more aroused and more scared your whole life.
Alfred exited the room to start doing Bruce's orders, and he kept watching. Tim, who had disappeared out of your line of sight for a second, came back holding a long, shiny and glinting pair of scissors. You tugged harder at the restraints and tried to push your body up to get away, thinking he was going to hurt you, but he just purred at you to calm you down, unfortunately, it worked, and your pussy tightened when Damian hissed at feeling your center pressing against his hard cock, when you pushed your hips up and against his. You could feel him poking your underthigh, only the clothes separating you.
— It's okay, omega, I’m just cutting off your clothes, it's gonna be easier to strip you that way. — Tim said soothingly, while purring and almost cooing at you. Your eyes widened when he said that, and actually started cutting your shirt open, until Dick was able to pull the ruined fabric off from under you.
All three alphas started purring at seeing your braless torso, chest already swelling with milk and nipples darkened. Omegas body produced milk when they had a puppy to feed, or during heats, and ruts, when an alpha was in a rut, and the omega was helping them, because the body understood it was a rough period, where a lot of energy was spent and not much nutrition came, since both were too busy procreating and too weak to go searching for food, so the milk was a lot helpful in those moments. There were even historical moments where that skill was useful in other contests, when the economy got so bad that most packs were starving, and the omegas of the pack helped them survive with milk.
Damian bit his lips and brought his right hand up to your left breast, squeezing it softly. Everyone was entranced, watching a single drop of milk come out, the breast not full yet. You arched your back, it felt good, so good that for a moment you forgot why you wanted to get away. Damian also didn't help your train of thought when his thumb started rubbing your stiff nipple, sending ripples of pleasure through your body and forcing your eyes closed. You forced yourself not to make a sound.
You snapped out of it when you felt Tim cutting your pants and underwear off. Your eyes widened at the feeling of being exposed and the almost cold air that made your hair stand. Your legs trembled and you felt Dick and Jason's hands working, uncoordinated pads of fingers dancing across the inside of your thighs.
Your arousal’s scent freely infastated the room now, and half of them growled, in exception of Bruce and Tim, who were keeping themselves more calm and collected.
— It's time to go now, let Damian and (Y/N) have their moment. — Bruce announced and you watched as Damian smirked, then you hid your face, sobbing against the pillow. He cooed at you while his other hand went down between your legs and started rubbing slow circles while pressing against your clit.
Dick sighed.
— Take care of them, Dami. Have fun and enjoy. — Dick patted Damian's shoulder, but you weren't sure the alpha above even noticed you, too busy gazing at you and your body, enjoying how warm and wet you were.
— Yeah, remember to do what we taught you, baby bird. — Damian only hummed at Jason's comment, and leaned down, pressing his chest to yours. He brought his mouth to the juncture of your neck and shoulder, and started leaving a trail of kisses up your neck, and under your jaw.
It was your first time feeling someone doing this, when you read fanfics and books, you never thought this could feel good like the writing always described, but it actually did, and you hated that you liked it, crying harder against the pillow and hoping his lips weren't moving closer to your face because he wanted to kiss you. You felt his nose sniffing your scent gland.
Tim hummed.
— Be careful with them, and don't take too long, everyone wants their turn. — Tim warned softly and was the last to exit the room, closing the door, but not locking it.
Damian’s warm breath huffed against your neck.
— Finally alone… — Damian whispered with a hoarse voice that made your hair stand. You whimpered and squeezed your eyes harder.
— Please, let me go… You don't have to do this, I won't tell anyone- — Your sentence was cut short when one of Damian's long and thick fingers invaded your entrance delicately. Your mouth opened on a silent scream, and the alpha watched you with lust in his eyes.
— Beloved… Omega… You will come to like this, I promise you that… — He sucked a faint hickey on your scent gland. His right hand started exploring the rest of your body, fumbling and squeezing the softer parts he found out he liked the most. You couldn't control your panting and small moans when his finger curled upwards inside you, touching your sweet spot.
— D-Dam-... A-Alpha… — You arched your back when he started fingering you faster, your sensitive walls milking a single finger, crying for a thick knot, thirsty for his seed, your womb empty of puppies.
— See… — He kissed your cheek. — We barely started, and yet… — Another kiss, closer to your mouth. — You're already dripping and earning for my knot… — Your lips met, it didn't seem like he had much experience, maybe it was his first kiss? Either way, you knew a little more about what you were doing, and he quickly learned. In just a few minutes, he was dominating your mouth. The younger alpha gave a slow bite to your lips when a second finger joined the first in fucking you, wet noises eccoing around the room.
You gained some clearance after a few moments, when he took his fingers off. You whined, not knowing if it was to plead him not to rape you, or because you wanted his cock stuffing you as soon as possible. You tried to force your head away from his, and he relented, pausing the kiss, but only to start taking his own clothes off. If your face wasn't already hot from the fever and arousal, you knew it would be now, feeling shy with everything new that was happening and his naked body, and surprised that you never once noticed his muscles before.
While afraid, you peeked down and saw his hard and bobbing dick, it was thick and above average, but not too much. Not too much for someone who wasn't a virgin like you were, that is.
You tried to sit up, to get away from him in a bolt of strength you didn't have until now, fighting your omega with as much as you could. But it proved to be no help, as it punished you by making your belly tug and hurt twice more. Your torso fell down on the bed again, powerless by pain, numbness, and the restraint around your wrist.
Damian only cooed, still kneeling above you and between your legs. You cried. You didn't feel his calloused hands holding and caressing your hips, but you felt the blunt wet tip against your entrance. You were ruined.
Your parents would hate you. They would say it was your fault for ignoring their warnings and shoving yourself inside a home full of alphas with no omega. They would kick you out of the pack. And if the Wayne's did good on their word of raping you one after the other, you would probably get pregnant, as you weren't on birth control. That is, if they didn't kill you or kept you hostage in their basement. And even if your pack wanted to, they wouldn't be able to do anything to get justice for you, as the Wayne's were much more influential and rich. You were only going to the same school as Damian because your parents worked as teachers there, for god's sake. You were doomed. And if they decided to mark you…
You cried harder, ashamed of being so aroused now and so dumb all along. For the first time, you hated being an omega.
But all those self-deprecating thoughts were muffled when he finally invaded you. It was slow, gentle, testing how things felt. Damian heaved a breath and buried his face on your neck, breathing your scent deep. It felt amazing, for the both of you. You were so deep in your heat that of course it wasn't going to hurt at all, silly you. Those alphas were right, they are always right. They can take care of you.
— … More… Please, I want more… — You moaned and tried moving your hips against his, forcing his cock to push against your walls faster. Damian's head snapped up, looking at you with interest and lust. You were already cockdrunk, as he was pussydrunk, and he wasn't even halfway inside yet.
He bottomed out with more hurry, after pulling in and out twice to test if you really weren't in pain. He moaned deep against your face before shoving his lips against yours again, while he thrusted his hips. The alpha found the perfect rhythm while pulling almost all the way in and out, in a steady dance. Your moans got louder by the second, your inner omega happy with all the attention you were receiving.
Your free hand shot up to rest on his back, nails digging his scarred skin, not knowing what to do. Damian's hips gradually grew in force, until the bed was shaking and softly hitting the wall. The sound of your hips colliding and your wetness clear as day didn't bother you, as you only started begging for the alpha. To be owned. To be knotted. To be breeded.
— See how I take care of you… — He kissed down your collarbone, murmuring against your skin. — Make you feel good… — One of his hands slid down to grip your thigh, pulling your leg up, purposefully looking for a deeper angle to ravish you. You gasped as he found it, and his thrusts got harder. You mumbled a bunch of agreements to whatever he was saying, you just wanted his knot! — You're my omega now, our omega now… — He softly bit your pouting nipple, being considerate as to not hurt the sensitive and swelling area. Your hand trembled on his back and shot up to pull his hair in an overwhelming wave of pleasure. He pulled weakly at your nipple with his teeth scraping the nerves on the area, until he let it go. — We will stuff you full of cum everyday and every hour… — His lips trailed down your ribs, but the position didn't allow him to go further down. He wanted to leave kisses on your whole body, and now he could do that, because now you weren't escaping them. He growled, resigning himself to traill his lips up through the space between your breasts. Your body trembled with the sound. — Fuck you real good… You will never have to beg, omega, we will spoil you with everything you need, everything you want… — His huge hands trailed up your body until they reached your chest. He squished them for a moment, enjoying how soft they were, and how pliant you were, looking straight into your dazed cockdrunk eyes. Imagining how your perfect pups will look like. Milk started coming out in small drops, so silent that he only noticed when it was dripping down his hand. His eyes shot down to assess the view and his knot started growing at the sight of your swelling breasts and darkened nipples, giving up milk for him, for him, so soft his fingers were digging and moulding the flesh, all while they were dancing up and down, bouncing, seducing him. You were seducing him. You were stunning, ravishing, perfect without even trying. He was happy his pack was the one tying you down to them, he wanted to kill someone just for thinking that someone else could have you like this. — … And you will give us everything we want…
He tentatively, almost hypnotized, leaned down and sucked your stiff nipple between his soft lips, sucking a small amount of milk inside, letting It rest on his tongue for a moment, savouring the taste, before swallowing.
You were sensitive, with a dull ache, but his suckling helped with the pain and sent waves of flickering pleasure against your body. You could feel him forcing his knot with each thrust to fit inside you as it gradually grew, and gasped, whimpering pleas for more. Begging him to keep going and stuff you full. You were both getting close to orgasm. Damian shut his eyes hard, overstimulated with the growing pleasure. He let go of your breast when he started feeling his canines getting more protruded, itching to bite your neck and claim you, his eyes also getting brighter, his inner alpha waiting to take ownership over you. Strip you off the life you had before. Forcing you to subjugate, until the smallest cells in your body knew who you belonged to.
He didn't hold himself, of course, and your first mark soon made home above your collarbone, your souls locking together and the intimacy going to an extraordinary level when you reached the peak of pleasure in tandem, while his knot swelled and made you stuck together, stopping any drop of cum from going to waste.
Every single drop was forced to stay inside of you, and Damian lifted your almost limp head, you both drunk, still coming down from the waves of pleasure, and forced your lips against his neck, his scent gland, and you, whose omega and heat had taken over since the moment his cock invaded you, didn't hesitate to mark him back, locking the bond completely.
— Good omega, good omega…

You flinched jaggedly as the dark cloth bag was finally ripped off your head. Eyes immediately squinting, they still strained to take in the unfamiliar space you’d been dragged to.
You were no longer in the hospital’s dark parking lot, nor were you in the black van you’d suddenly been tossed into, but instead, you found yourself in a dark living room. It was elegantly decorated, from the Persian rug to the dramatic, antique fireplace flicking behind the cluster of suit-clad criminals glaring down at you.
“This her?” one of them grumbled.
“Yep, one doctor as per your request,” the one who’d abducted you grinned, proudly planting a palm on his hip, “even choose a pretty one just for shits and giggles,” his starkly different mannerisms only made the others seem that much more intimidating.
The broad-figured one with a shock of sandy hair then stepped closer to where you stood, “alright, here’s the thing, doc,” his head tilted slightly to get on your level as he spoke to you directly, “you’re gonna do exactly as we say and then everything will be alright, okay?” he stared in your eyes as you offered him a shaky nod, “okay,” he exhaled, “you got a name?”
“Y/n Y/l/n…” you uttered before hearing yourself try to correct, “but I–…”
“But what?” the same man croaked.
“I-I’m not a doctor…”
“God damn it!” someone rumbled as everyone’s eyes flicked to the man who’d captured you, “we can’t fucking trust the new guy to do anything.”
“Well, she’s wearing scrubs,” he tried, frantically gesturing to your uniform, “I just thought–”
“You fucked up, Lang!” the first man who you’d heard speak barked loudly, “and now we’re not just gonna lose one of our brothers tonight, but also the head of the snake. Great fucking job,” a sharp click then caused your eyes to find the gun he yanked out, “and now she gotta die as well–”
“Wait!” you shrieked as both of your palms shot up in the air, “no! Please don’t kill me! I-I’m a nurse! I’m a nurse! I can help! Whoever’s hurt, I can help!”
Seemingly superior to the others present, the blonde one stared at you intensely for a while before exhaling a verdict, “shit… well, I guess it’s better than nothing…” his polished shoes then began to shuffle before he gestured to you, “come this way.”
Hesitantly, you slowly shadowed him out of the living room, down a dim hallway, and into the chamber that bloomed at the bottom of the corridor. In the centre of the dark room, bathed by two glowing pendants, stood a large pool table, and upon the green felt, with colourful orbs haphazardly scatted all about, there laid a man, unconscious and bleeding.
The brunette’s suit was sodden with crimson, though you couldn’t tell from here how much of it was his own.
The gangster who was standing by the side and watching over the wounded individual glanced up at your arrival and asked his fellow men, “this the doctor?”
“No, it’s a fucking stripper,” you twisted your neck at the sarcastic tone as the guy who’d only moments ago pulled a gun on you waltzed past you and entered the room as well, “yes, of course it is, Tony. How’s the boss?”
“Still alive,” he answered in a sigh and cast his glance back down upon the man on the pool table.
Slowly stepping up, you carefully let your stare wash over the mobster, from the frazzled and blood-soaked attire to the metal-looking hand poking out one of the sleeves.
“What happened?” you asked carefully.
“Miss,” someone grumbled as they set a bag of supplies down beside you on the games table, “just fix him.”
“If you wanna give your friend a better chance, then you give me as much information as possible about what happened to him,” you uttered as you found a pair of gloves and slipped them on.
Letting out a sigh, the blonde fellow then said, “it was a shootout.”
Snatching up a pair of scissors, you began to snip in the man’s clothes, staring at the sleeve closest to you, “how many times was he shot?”
“I don’t know, he–… a lot of rounds went off,” he grunted, the events of the night weighting his broad shoulders down, “I wasn’t exactly counting.”
Two bullets. That’s how many you found when his dress shirt was in tatters on the floor. One was lodged in his right arm four finger widths above his elbow, while the other had strayed a bit further north and buried itself in his bulky bicep. You also found other scrapes and scratches along his torso, assumingly from other bullets that hadn’t been as lucky as those two.
The smallest of relieved sighs flowed from your lungs as you discovered that he wasn’t in a critical enough condition to be in need of a surgeon, at least not from what you could tell with the limited resources currently at your disposal.
As you carefully set to work, first digging the bullets out before cleaning the wounds with saline, your lips slowly parted as you treaded a curved needle, “…so, not that I don’t love the change to my evening plans,” you didn’t dare shift your glance as you asked, “but don’t you have a regular guy for cleaning up these sorts of messes?”
“We did… he died tonight, trying to stop that from happening,” the blonde man gestured to the injuries you began to stitch up.
Blinking up to find his eye, you uttered sincerely, “I’m so sorry for your loss…” feeling yourself, even under such circumstances, uncontrollably slip into those compassionate parts of your profession.
A slight scoff bubbled out of the gangster, taken aback by your unexpected gentleness, “yeah, me too. Banner was one hell of a guy…”
Once each of the wounds were sutured closed and you’d bandaged him up, you pushed yourself back from the pool table.
“Alright,” you exhaled and glanced up at the criminals lurking in the shadows of the chamber, “I’m done.”
“Yeah?” one of them stepped up to get a better look, “he’s alright?”
“No, he’s not alright, he was shot multiple times and should be in a fucking hospital,” your eyes briefly fluttered shut as you heard yourself snap, “now, can I please go home?”
Catching the eye of the blonde one, second in command, you watched as his jaw briefly clenched, the muscles dancing beneath his skin before he breathed, “no, you’re not done.”
“But I did exactly as you asked–”
“Like you said, he should be in a hospital right now, but we can’t have that happen, so instead, you’re gonna stay here till he’s out of the woods.”
“What? I can’t–”
“You’re a nurse, right?” he croaked to shut you up, “so fucking do your job and nurse him back to health.”
Three whole days ended up passing by before Mr Barnes slowly began to regain consciousness.
“Oh, you’re awake!” you snapped back into work mode, springing from your seat and leaning in over the bed which he’d previously been moved into. As the mobster instinctively began to sit up, his eyes barely open yet, you laid a soft palm upon his metal arm and uttered, “sir, please don’t move,” and watched as his clenched jaw almost silenced a groan, “one second, I’ll give you something for the pain,” before you shifted a moment to scavenge through the supplies you’d been given. Once the medicine was found, you exhaled slowly as you injected it, gently pressing down the plunger of the syringe, “there you go…”
You let yourself suck in a deep breath before your sharp eyes washed over him, briefly assessing him as he woke, though as your gaze flickered up to meet his own, initially with the intent of checking his pupillary response, the manner he stared back at you caught you so of guard that a shiver trickled down your spine.
“Sir, do you know what your name is?” you asked in a clear tone.
“Mhm…” he hummed and continued to stare at you as if you were an angel, “Bucky…”
“Bucky, great, that’s good,” you nodded, “and do you know where you are?”
His gaze didn’t shift away from your visage as he then murmured, “heaven…”
“No, I assure you, you’re not dead,” grasping the stethoscope draped around your neck, you shifted it into place to take a quick listen to his heart, “you almost were, a few times, but you aren’t.”
As the steady thumping of his pulse filled your ears and seeped into your soul, his deep voice washed over you once again and layered atop the beat, “I’m guessing you had something to do with that?”
Catching his unwavering eye a moment, you then averted yours and muttered, “I was just doing my job…” before retracting the stethoscope from his chest and casting your glance towards the door, “I should probably go tell the others that you’re awake.”
TWO WEEKS LATER
“…and Mr Jensen in 401 is complaining of a headache, so you might wanna check that out as well.”
“Alright, cool,” the doctor scribbled down the last of your words on the little notepad in his palm before his gaze flickered up to catch yours, “thank you so much, Y/n,” he flashed you a warm smile.
Mirroring his expression, you hugged the charts in your grasp closer to your chest, “any time, Dr Parker.”
“Peter, please,” his thumb extended to click the top of his blue pen before sliding it into the breast pocket of his white coat, “hey, I was gonna go grab a cup of coffee right now, do you wanna join?” he tried to keep his tone casual.
Blinking back at him, your breath couldn’t help but get caught in your throat, “I–, uhm… I’d love to, but I get off in a little bit. Wednesdays are always just morning shifts for me.”
“Oh, alright,” he nodded understandingly, though the gentle rejection still tainted his features slightly.
“But another time,” you offered, successfully brightening his smile once more.
“Yeah?” his elbow curled up to lean against the supportive railing that lined the hospital hallways.
“Sure. I mean, I drink coffee, you drink coffee,” you awkwardly began to dig yourself into a hole, “the chances of us bumping into each other at the coffee cart are pretty high–”
But your sentence was then cut short as Peter’s pager suddenly pinged in his pocket.
Fishing the small device out, his eyes flickered down to the small screen before he croaked, “oh, sorry. I gotta run.”
“Of course,” you swiftly waved a hand and watched as his feet began to shuffle into a run.
“Talk later!” Peter called over his shoulder before he rounded a corner and disappeared into the maze of the hospital.
Twisting around, your feet carried you the remaining distance towards the nurses’ station overlooking the ICU. As you laid the stack of files in your arms down on the counter, a familiar voice found your ears right before her visage popped into your periphery.
“Please tell me that that was what I think it was.”
Your gaze stayed glued on the charts a moment longer as you ignored your friend’s prying, “hello to you too, Kate.”
When your head finally raised and you let her catch your eye, her wide ones questioned you before she expectantly poked once more, “well?”
“Well what?” you shrugged, though your feeble attempts at shutting the pending subject down failed as she shot you a glare, efficiently causing you to crumble with a sigh, “yes, he asked me out again–, or kinda. It was just coffee.”
“And you finally said yes?” she smiled keenly.
Holding back your scoff, you simply uttered, “no,” before spinning on your heel.
“Again?” she shuffled slightly to catch up to the pace you swiftly slipped into, “why not? He’s kind, he’s a doctor, he’s hot,” she listed off, counting on her fingers, “he’s literally perfect for you.”
“I know he is…” you tilted your head, almost with an air of shame, “he’s exactly the type of guy that I should be running after…”
Though you liked him as a person and cared for him enough to call him your friend, those feelings you caught yourself forcing just hadn’t bubbled up yet. He was the kind of man that you deserved, that you should fall for, and certainly not the monster that still haunted you, that for some reason wouldn’t stop popping into your mind, especially at inappropriate times, like very late at night…
“So then why aren’t you?” Kate asked as you entered the employee locker room.
And though thoughts of a gruff gangster caused your heart to swell, you still muttered, “I don’t know…” as an excuse before you popped open your locker and uttered, “hey… what do you know about mobsters here in the city?
“Other than the horror stories I’ve picked up in the ER, not too much,” she leaned against the row of cubbies beside your own as you dug out your bag and began to change out of your scrubs and back into the clothes you’d worn early this morning when the sun was still only a promise waiting to rise, “though I did grow up here, so I probably do know a bit more than you,” she acknowledged your move to the city only a few years prior, “why? Are you suddenly in the mood for a change in careers?”
Though the truth was on the tip of your tongue, you still found yourself obeying the commands the gangsters had sent you home with. Telling the cops was no use because they were all in their pockets, and confiding in a loved one also wasn’t a smart choice as that would only put them in danger.
“Have you ever heard of someone called Bucky Barnes?” you asked, instinctively lowering your voice to a whisper.
The ever light-hearted expression plastered upon Kate’s face fell at the recognition of that name, “yeah…”
“Really?” your brows rose, “what do you know about him?”
“I mean, other than that he’s the supposed leader of the Avengers, not too much.”
“The Avengers?”
“Yeah, one of New York’s most notorious gangs,” she let out a breath, “from what little I know, they get up to a shit ton of stuff straight out of a De Niro movie or something, but their real money maker is cocaine… I mean, that’s why the head of the group is known as the winter soldier.”
“How do you know about all this stuff?” you squinted back at her in slight amazement.
“Went to med school with a few coke heads, might have dated one of them,” she blurted before shaking her head and getting back to the subject at hand, “anyways, Y/n, the point is, you don’t wanna mess with those types, trust me.”
“I know,” you uttered quietly as you shrugged on your coat and pushed your locker closed, “I wasn’t planning on it, I was just curious…”
As you dragged your foaming toothbrush over the last of your teeth, a loud knock suddenly rattled your front door, causing you to jump atop the pink bathmat in your tiny bathroom.
Neck twisted out towards the entryway of your apartment, you briefly leaned over the sink to spit out the toothpaste slowly leaking out of your mouth, before your feet began to carry you towards the exit.
One of your palms momentarily ran over the edge of your pyjama-clad arm as the night chill soaked through the cotton and made you yearn for the warmth of your bed.
Though as you pulled on the handle, the haunting figures on the other side of the door caused your blood to freeze with recognition. Standing tall on the other side of the threshold, there stood two of the Avengers’ henchmen.
“You need to come with us,” the one called Barton ordered coldly. Over the few days the gang had held you captive, you’d picked up on the names of many of the members, including the two that stood before you now.
“What?” your chest rose and fell rapidly, “I–, please, I swear, I haven’t told a soul.”
Having them knock at your door was one thing, but even just the thought of criminals such as them knowing where you lived sent you into a spiral.
“Yeah, we know you haven’t,” Scott put a hand on the doorframe, “that’s not why we’re here.”
“What happened?” you murmured as you were led into one of the many sitting rooms in the mysterious manor they once again brought you to. In an armchair before you, half-empty glass of bourbon in metal hand and the sleeves rolled up on his blood-tainted shirt, there sat the big bad winter soldier himself, panting as he slowly sipped.
Though when the sound of your voice filled the room, Bucky’s eyes only snapped up to yours for a moment before he shot a glare at his men.
“What is she doing here?” he grumbled lowly.
“Boss, you busted your stitches,” Lang gestured tensely to the crimson slowly staining his crisp white shirt, “what else were we–”
Intersecting the conversation, the broad form of Steve stepped into the space between the gangsters and swiftly snuffed the pending argument out, “thank you, Barton, Lang,” he nodded to each of them, “you can go,” and you watched the pair that had brought you back exited the room. Shifting his weight, Bucky’s right hand man turned to you and offered you a polite smile, “Y/n, pleasure to see you again.”
“Yeah,” you exhaled, not masking your disdain of the situation you’d been dragged into yet again, “I wish I could say the same…” before you shifted your eyes to the man in the chair, though still directed your question at Steve, “what do you need me to do?”
As you shifted closer to the intimidating leader, ever drinking, surely to dull the pain, Rogers murmured as you kneeled down to assess, “I think it’s just the one on his shoulder that’s–”
“Yeah, I see it,” you cut him off, then glanced back over your shoulder at him, “do you still have that medical bag?”
“Yeah, one second,” he swiftly disappeared to fetch it, leaving you all alone with the feared mob boss.
With the crackling fireplace off to the side as your only source of light, you cautiously raised your hands and asked, “do you mind taking this off?” motioning to the shirt he wore.
“Yeah, sure,” Bucky sighed and sat down his glass before shrugging the item off. Though you’d stared at his bare chest for hours on end before, soaking in his reveal once again for some reason caused your heartbeat to pick up, though you swiftly averted your gaze in an attempt at staying professional.
Not long passed before Rogers had returned with the supplies, and you’d commenced redoing his stitches.
“So,” you murmured though your concentration, weaving his skin back together, “do I even wanna know how this happened?”
Blinking down at you, your face close to your work and therefore his skin, Bucky breathed, “probably not...” and as his stare only intensified over the next few stitches, his low timbre once again washed over you as the corners of his lips tugged into the slightest of smirks, “cute PJs, by the way…”
“Yeah, I didn’t exactly get a chance to change,” you felt your cheeks heat up.
“Oh, I'm not complaining,” his gaze shifted to take in the way the cool night air had caused your nipples to become visible like pebbles beneath the thin stripy fabric, the comment making you shift tensely on your knees.
Once the last of the knots were tied off and you’d snipped the end of the thread, you wrapped the wounds back up with clean bandages before placing the roll of gauze back into the medical bag.
“Alright, uhm,” you shifted back, “you’re good now,” a slight winch shot through you as you watched him briefly test out his arm’s mobility, “just be careful, try not to use it too much.”
Catching your eye, he uttered softly, “thank you,” before shifting his gaze to the gangster by the door, “Rogers?”
“Yes, boss?”
“See to it that she gets home safe.”
ONE MONTH LATER
“I’ve heard the risotto here is really good,” Peter noted as you both skimmed the menus resting on the tablecloth before you, the crystal chandeliers illuminating the restaurant cast a soft glow down upon the choices.
“Yeah?” you briefly glanced up to catch the doctor’s eye, “well, maybe I should get that then,” you shrugged before shifting slightly in your seat, “hey,” you captured his gaze once more, “could you maybe order for me? I just need to–…” you trailed off, letting the thumb you discreetly pointed over your shoulder in the direction of the bathrooms fill out the rest of the sentence.
“Oh, yeah, of course,” he nodded.
“Great, thank you,” you smiled as you rose. The long, cobalt-blue, velvet dress you wore briefly swooshed around your legs before the soft click of your heels against the polished floors carried you through the maze of tables.
It was the third date you’d ventured on with the kind doctor. The third one and yet you still didn’t have any feelings towards him.
Stubbornly trying as you might, you still couldn’t get the poison out of your system and do the right thing.
Once you exited the ladies’ room, and big breath of courage in your lungs as you pushed open the door, it all seeped out as you walked through the small hallway that connected the lavatories with the dining space, and you accidentally bumped into two figures that waited in the space.
Unsure of who was to blame for the collision, you immediately just muttered, “oh, sorry–,” before you glanced up at the pair and your apology crumbled from your lips, your frame immediately freezing up at the recognition.
“Listen to me. You are going to quietly walk back to your little date, tell him that you’re not feeling well and need to go home,” Stark kept his voice hushed as both he and the other gangster slowly cornered you, the other one grasping your arm to keep you in place, “and then you’re gonna come with us.”
Sucking in a breath, you then tilted your chin slightly, “and if I don’t?”
“Then we won’t hesitate to make a scene,” Barton shifted the edge of his jacket out of the way to flash you the gun strapped beneath, “so you can either walk with us and safe a life or you can not only have a dying gangster’s blood on your hands, but also everyone in this fucking restaurant.”
With the clench of your jaw, you glared up at them and murmured, “...fine,” before you ripped your arm free and began to walk back into the dining area and the table where Peter still sat.
Flashing you a smile as you neared, the doctor swiftly said, “so, I ordered this chardonnay that the waiter said was good. You drink wine, right?”
“I–, uhm…” your fingers clutched the back of the chair as you tried to appear as you had before, even though now you felt as if your hammering heart might spring straight out of your ribcage, “Peter, I’m really sorry, but I gotta go,” you briefly scrambled your brain before adding, “the hospital paged me. There was a big accident downtown.”
“Really?” he fished out his own beeper from his pocket and furrowed down at it, “I didn’t get paged, so it probably can’t be that bad.”
“Yeah, but nurses shortage, you know?”
“Right,” he nodded, disappointment slightly polluting his understanding expression.
“I'm really sorry,” you uttered as you picked up your small purse from the chair.
“No, it’s fine,” he shook his head gently, “hey, I get it,” he shrugged before waving a hand, “go.”
“Thank you,” you stood there a moment longer, unsure of how you should depart, “uhm… bye,” before you awkwardly shifted closer to his seat and leaned down to press a brief kiss to his cheek as you offered him a half-hearted hug.
“Who is it this time?” you sighed as you were led into an elegant space, surely intended for parties judging by the long bar that stretched along the back wall. Glaring at the only man seated on one of the barstools, you asked impatiently, “is it you? Did you hurt yourself again?”
Glancing over his shoulder as you halted your stride halfway down the short steps, a smile appeared on Bucky’s face as he leaned a forearm against the bar top and bellowed, “Y/n! Come, have a drink with me,” he waved a hand for you to take the seat beside him.
Standing your ground, you squinted back at him in confusion, “no, I can’t, I–, where’s the patient?”
“The patient?” he echoed as if you were speaking a foreign language.
“Yes,” you huffed, your annoyance simmering into a full-on boil, “the person who’s on death’s door, the reason why I, a medical professional, is here,” you placed your hands on your hips and asked once again, “is it you?”
“No, I’m phenomenal,” he pursed his lips as he snatched up the stout glass waiting for him on the marble counter, “never been better.”
“Okay, so who is it?”
Tearing his gaze away from you, he then uttered, “no one,” before raising the drink up to his lips. As your mouth parted and your glare nearly burned straight through him, the mobster casually added, “you look stunning, by the way,” before twisting in his seat to face you more, “I didn’t know they changed scrubs out with gowns.”
“No, I–, I was on a date–,” you muttered faintly through your confusion, slightly shaking your head in an attempt to clear it before you raised a hand, “wait, excuse me, no one’s injured?”
“No,” Barnes shook his head, “no one’s hurt or dying,” then added as if your reaction was a tad bit too dramatic for his taste, “you can relax, it’s fine.”
But instead, the opposite emotions roiled inside of you as you slowly ascended a single one of the remaining steps, “so you mean to tell me that your men threatened me, my date and a whole restaurant of people, then dragged me all the way out here again, for nothing?” you fumed.
“No, it wasn’t for nothing,” he shrugged, “they brought you back here because I told them to,” he kept his ocean eyes upon you as he once again repeated, “now, come drink with me.”
“No, I don’t want a fucking drink,” you roared.
But then, just as swiftly as you had raised your voice, Bucky’s steely hand dipped beneath his suit jacket and pulled out a gun.
“I asked you nicely,” his stern tone rolled off his tongue slowly as he aimed the weapon upon you, “now sit your ass down and share a drink with me.”
Carefully, you finally followed his orders and sat down at the bar beside him.
“Good girl. That wasn’t so hard now, was it?” he uttered as he sat the gun down beside his drink. Raising up a hand to the silent shadow behind the bar, a glass was soon slid across the counter, one Bukcy pushed closer towards you, “here,” he said as you stared down at the orange peel floating at the top. As you lifted up the cocktail, the gangster beside you raised his own to click yours, “cheers.”
You briefly toyed with the thought of just taking a sip, though opted instead to down it all, both out of the desperate hope that the alcohol would aid the strange evening, but also in an attempt to fast forward a tad closer to your longed-for departure, ripping the bandage off instead of nursing it all night long.
Though as you sat the glass back down on the bar, the bottom clanged against the marble much more forcefully than you’d intended as the fingers you clutched it with began to tingle. Blinking heavily a few times, your hand accidentally knocked over the empty drink as a numbing sensation began to bloom within your chest and spread throughout your body.
Trying to get up from your seat, you mumbled foggily, “what the hell?” though quickly stumbled as your legs felt like jelly beneath your velvet gown.
“Whoa, careful now, angel,” Bucky’s calm gaze trailed you chillingly as you tried to steady yourself.
“The fuck did you do?” you panted as your wide eyes watched him raise from his seat.
“It's okay,” he uttered softly, “it’s all gonna be okay,” before your world turned to black and you passed out into his arms.
When you finally stirred, you were no longer at the bar, nor any other room you’d been in before. You were in a bedroom, situated on a spacious mattress and alongside countless fluffy maroon pillows.
As you sat up, a low rustling found your ears and drew your vision down towards the coldness clinging around your ankle. Strung between the bottom corner of the bedframe and your own foot, there shined a chain, one that, try as you instinctively did, you couldn’t snap out of.
But then, as the door to the room creaked open and caused your body to flinch, a plea swiftly flowed out of you as you watched Rogers step inside, balancing a small tray with a glass and a tall decanter of clear water.
“Steve!” you crawled to the bottom of the bed, “I–… help me, please,” you begged, hearing tears thicken up your voice as they rolled down your cheeks, “you’re a good man, deep down I know you don’t wanna stand by and let this happen. Can you unlock me? Please? Help me get out of here.”
But just as you waited for Steve’s lips to part, you instead heard, “shh, don’t waste your breath, honey,” as in strolled Bucky, causing you to swiftly scramble as far back on the bed as the chain would allow.
Sitting down in a chair just out of your reach, the fireplace opposing the bed, directly behind where he sat, clacked and lit up his spine as he settled into the seat and directed his cold gaze upon you.
“Glad to see you awake,” he uttered calmly.
“Fuck you!” you swiftly spat as you hugged your knees tightly to your chest.
“And with all of your charms still intact,” he tilted his head, a light smirk blooming on his lips as your vulgar language hadn’t fazed him one bit.
“Let me go,” you demanded.
“Yeah, that’s not gonna happen, my angel,” his burly arms folded across his chest, “this is for your own protection,” he briefly gestured to the chain, “we wouldn’t want you to do anything stupid or rash now, would we?” one of his eyebrows twitched, “I can’t let anything happen to you,” he uttered as you continued to stare daggers at him, “you need to be kept as safe as possible so you can keep on helping me the way that you have.”
“What? You want me to be your gang’s personal nurse?” you scoffed, “is this your sick and twisted way of offering me a job, because if so, no thanks!”
“Yeah, no, this isn’t a job offering, I’m not interested in those talents of yours,” he leaned further back in the seat before he began to explain, “you see, for the past few years, I’ve had a serious string of bad luck. Deals have fallen through, rats have been found, the feds have been snipping at our heels and countless of my men have lost their lives,” he listed off, “but, then I met you,” his eyes flickered up to capture your own, “and it all turned around,” he uttered, “I tell you, when you’re here, it’s fate herself is on my side and nothing whatsoever could go wrong. Like having you has made me a fucking god or something, that’s the level of power you’ve bestowed in me,” a faint smile tugged at his lips as those words rolled off his tongue, “so no, you can not leave. You have to stay right here where I can make sure you’re safe and sound. Although, just because you get to be kept safe, that doesn’t mean you’re free of any consequences if you step out of line… it also doesn’t mean that I’ll deny anyone of your beauty if it pleases them… so, I guess it’s more along the lines of you just staying alive under my watch.”
In the blind rage his words threw you into, your fingers wrapped around the bedside lamp before you chucked it across the room. Though just before it could strike the gangster’s head, he casually ducked out of the way, the lamp instead smashing on the floor behind him as a chuckle began to rumble within his chest.
“That’s cute,” he laughed lowly, “you’ve got some bite. It’ll get you in trouble, but it’s adorable.”
“I'm not interested in being your good luck charm, you superstitious fuck!” you yelled as he got up from his seat.
Huffing out a condescending grin, “give it some time, angel,” he fastened the button on his dark suit jacket before smoothing a palm down over the front, “the human psyche is much more fragile than you’d think and can get used to some surprising conditions,” he ignored the scream that desperately tore from your lungs and instead turned to Steve standing by the door and asked him calming, “Rogers, would you mind cleaning that up?” gesturing to the broken lamp on the floor, and as he received a small nod in return, he murmured, “thank you,” before exiting the room and leaving you to your fate.
“Seriously?” Steve let out a laugh when he finally coaxed the truth out as to why you hadn’t been touching any of the food they’d brought you, “and here I thought you were just a picky eater.”
“Well, you’ve already drugged me once so what’s stopping you from doing it again,” you explained, glaring down at the plate before you as he attempted to stifle his laughter.
“I swear, cross my heart, your pasta is not poisoned.”
Continuing to squint down at the food, you kissed your teeth, “prove it.”
“Really?” his brows floated up, “alright,” he sighed as he sat down across from you. Dragging your plate closer, he twirled some of the spaghetti onto the fork before slipping it into his mouth, “see?” he chewed, “I’m fine, and so will you be when you get some food in that belly of yours.”
Pushing it back towards you, hesitantly, you picked up the fork and slowly began to eat. It had only been little things you’d consumed the past couple of days being here, things you could be certain weren’t tainted, like the odd apple and such.
Though as you chewed and finally began to settle your stomach’s nauseating rumbling, tears began to stream down your cheeks.
No matter how hard you tried to beg, none of the mobsters would help you, as their loyalty was just too hard for you to crack.
“Hey…” your bloodshot eyes then flickered up to Rogers as he noticed your weeping, “it’ll get easier, I promise,” he attempted in a soft tone.
“How?” you blinked back at him hopelessly, “I am being locked up in a room by a maniac as if I’m just some trinket for him to own.”
Throwing a brief glance over his shoulder, he then leaned in a bit closer to cautiously advise you, “…there might be some things you could do to change your situation…”
“What?” a spark suddenly flickered within you, “I’d do anything.”
“…you might consider trying to get closer to Barnes…” his words remained hesitant, “…if he begins to care for you, then he might treat you differently…”
“Like, he’d let me go?”
“I don’t know,” he exhaled, “but maybe it could get that chain off your ankle,” he gestured to your foot, “baby steps.”
ONE MONTH LATER
“Here,” Steve croaked as he suddenly burst through the doors to your room, a big flat box in his arms which he tossed on the bed beside you. Peeking inside, a folded-up bundle of black fabric met your eye, “put it on,” he ordered hastily, “make yourself presentable.”
“Why?” you blinked up at him, your brows knitting gently together.
“Because the boss requested it,” he answered impatiently.
“What, he wants to play dress up with me now? Treat me like a doll?”
Over the past month, you had gone from being scared out of your mind, barely sleeping at night, horrified of what they might do to you, till the paralysing fear slowly began to melt away as not much happened at all, in fact so little that you grew bored in your imprisonment, thinking that the big bad gangsters were just all bark and no bite. Perhaps that was a dangerous confidence to develop, growing cocky in your restlessness, but you couldn’t help it.
Letting out a low sigh, “just put it on,” Rogers’ head tilted before he said, “I’ll be outside, yell when you’re done.”
Popping the lid off all the way, you then slipped into the black gown waiting within. It was long and simple in its beauty as it hugged all of your curves like a second skin.
Right before you called out to the mobster in the hallway, you leaned in closer to the mirror on the left side of the room. The dark storm clouds visible out the gothic windows that filled up the wall behind you blossomed in the reflection alongside you as you momentarily fussed with your hair to make it match the elegant dress better.
Once Steve had entered the room once again, the very last thing you expected was what he did next.
Walking straight up to you, without a word, he bent down and unlocked the chain binding you to the bedpost. At first, a wave of hope washed over you till it was drowned out by the unsettling notion as to where he would take you and just what plans were on the horizon.
Grabbing you by the arm, he dragged you out of the room and down the dark hallway you’d only seen glimpses of before. You tried to ask him what was going on, though he didn’t offer you any clue in return, only remained silent as he hauled you through the maze-like manor till a wide set of steps found you, leading you down into a garage where a group of the other gangsters already stood beside the black car rolled up by the base of the stairs.
Standing in the middle with an arm resting against the roof of the vehicle, Bucky’s gaze swiftly landed upon you as you ascended the stone steps.
“Well,” the mob boss’ eyes roamed your form, “don’t you look pretty.”
Biting your tongue, you greeted him politely, “Mr Barnes.”
“Shall we go?” he cracked open one of the car doors.
“Where?” you tried, though your question only caused him to breathe out a smile as he ignored it and instead commanded softly.
“Get in the car, angel,” his metal arm rested atop the door.
Riding in a different vehicle than you, it was Clint who slipped in behind the wheel of your car and drove you the silent route towards the mysterious destination.
Though once the car came to a stop, the door to your left cracked open from the outside and there to greet you was an outstretched metal hand to help you exit.
You didn’t recognise the building that loomed before you, though it was grand and opulent with large steps leading you and all the other arrivals up to what sounded like a party already buzzing on.
“So, you needed a date,” you exhaled as Barnes took your arm and began to lead you up the stairs, a cluster of his men shadowing behind you both.
“No,” he cocked his head, “I didn’t need it...”
Casting your glance around at the other guests that passed, you asked, “what kinda party is this anyway? Let me guess, human trafficking auction?” you were completely serious, though still managed to make the gangster laugh gently.
“It’s a wedding,” his chuckle finished billowing out of his lungs, “or a funeral,” he tilted his head, “I'm not quite sure.”
“How could you not be sure?” you shot him a glance as you reached the top of the steps and he dragged you inside the marbled halls, “there’s a pretty significant difference.”
“They all just kinda melt together at this point,” he sighed, “I have at least one of these a week I gotta show my face at, just out of respect.”
Taking a look around, you uttered, “well, do you at least know who this funeral wedding is for?”
“No fucking clue,” he exhaled before following the signs and leading you into the venue’s ballroom.
Turns out it was a wedding for some couple you hadn’t yet spotted, though you’d already read their names a thousand times with all the stuff they were plastered upon.
You stayed quiet and lingered by Bucky’s side as he shook some people’s hands and made some small talk before the two of you found yourselves seated at one of the many round tables in the hall.
Blinking up at the floral centrepiece, your fingers fiddled with the white tablecloth as the hours rolled by. Soon, not only the complementary glass of champagne you’d been handed back when you arrived was sloshing in your belly, but also quite a bit more alcohol as you decided that was a good tool to make the evening more bearable.
It however also came with the hindrance of boosting your cockiness as you eventually found yourself poking the bear.
“You know for a big bad gangster,” you stared over at him, leaned back in the seat next to yours, “you’re actually not that scary up close,” you pursed your lips, causing a chuckle to rumble within his chest because of just how untrue that statement was, “smiling at everyone, being polite. Are you sure you really are the big bad winter solider? The king of New York with no heart and only an imagination for torture…”
“Well…” he huffed out a short laugh as he met your gaze, “don’t you have me just all figured out.”
“Some of your guys may have filled me in a bit,” you tilted your head.
“Have they now?” he continued to look amused.
“Yeah, well, a bit at least,” you seized your glass and took another sip.
As you placed the flute back down on the table and rested your cheek in a propped-up palm, your stare only intensified into a squint as Bucky’s eyes flickered back around the room.
But as his gaze fluttered back to notice your gawking, he muttered, “what?”
“Why aren’t you mean tonight?” you uttered through the haze fuzzing up your mind.
Tongue flicking out to wet his lips, his eyes briefly dipped before he uttered, “do you want me to be mean?” a playful smirk twitched at the corner of his lip in a threat to appear.
“Is it all just a lie?” you asked, the subtext of his previous words flowing directly over your dizzy head.
“What?”
Squinting back at him, you then breathed, “there’s always a part of me that’s still scared, imagining what you might do to me… but now,” you slowly drew out, “I don’t think you’re actually ever gonna do anything,” you blindly decided, “that’s not really who you are, they’re all just empty threats…”
“Hm…” he hummed, a slight smile blooming upon his lips as he stared back at you, “okay…” before he leaned in closer to utter, “and just what makes you think that I haven’t already?” your face immediately dropped as his words caused your frame to freeze up, “tell me, Y/n,” his breath fanned across your cheeks, “did you sleep well last night? Or the night before for that matter, or–, well, just during the time you’ve spent here with me?”
As your shock not only showed in your expression but also in your complete lack of speech, he simply grinned back at your stunned features before grabbing you by the hand and breaking the moment.
“Come on,” he dragged you with him as he then stood up himself, “let’s dance.”
With an argument on the tip of your tongue, the appendage, just as the rest of you, still remained too dumbfounded for it to come to fruition. You didn’t manage to gather your wits once again till he had you on the middle of the floor, wide hand on your waist as you swayed to the music.
As his hold slowly tightened and he brought you closer to his broad frame, your breath suddenly hitched as you blinked up into his eyes, the air between you growing thick. The hand that grasped your own near swallowed your palm in a dizzying contrast. Goosebumps began to erupt across your skin as you felt your heartbeat thump not only in your chest, but also much further south, a mortifying clue to the dark truth you hoped he didn’t somehow notice.
Gliding his palm up the length of your spine, it came to rest between your shoulder blades as he then drew you in closer and your gaze fell to the band strumming over his shoulder.
“Does the thought of me playing with you at night turn you on?” he whispered in your ear and continued to gently sway you to the music, “because if you want me to wake you, all you have to do is ask. Though my attempts so far at rubbing your luck off on me have been rather eventful, I’m still sure it would be better if you gave me a bit of a hand…”
Tilting your head back to blink up at him, you thought you were gonna spit him in the face for making such an accusation, till your stare acted of its own accord and fluttered down to fixate on his lips.
It almost felt as if they were calling for you, begging you closer like a stubborn magnet. But before you could close the short distance that kept you two apart, Barton appeared in your periphery and tapped his boss on the shoulder.
As he leaned in to whisper in his ear, you couldn’t pick up on the words over the music, though watched as Bucky’s face swiftly grew hard.
“What’s going on?” you asked as the secretive message came to an end and the mobster’s wide hands faded from your frame.
Ignoring your question, Bucky instead cast his glance over your head at one of the men behind you and ordered sternly, “Stark? Get her home, now.”
“What’s happening?” you tried again, though without success as Tony dragged you away and the remaining gathered to converse in hushed tones.
Perhaps it was because of the chaos of whatever was happening, perhaps just a simple mistake, but when you returned back to the manor, the shackle wasn’t reunited with your ankle.
Not willing to let that gift slip through your fingers, you soon grasped that opportunity tight and made an attempt at your escape.
Sneaking down the many hallways, you successfully hid from a handful of gruff-looking men before you realised you couldn’t remember the path to the garage or any other way out of the labyrinth of a building that kept you swallowed in the dark.
However, your mission turned into a swiftly sinking ship as soon as you rounded the wrong corner and crossed the threshold of the last room you should have entered.
In the centre of the space stood two chairs, both with individuals strapped to them, though only one of them was still alive. Before the seated pair and with his back turned to your frozen-up form, there stood Bucky. Returned from the party and with both his jacket and tie torn off, his sleeves were rolled up though still tainted in small crimson flecks of the deed he’d just done.
“Come on, Vladimir…” Barnes uttered as he kneeled down in front of the battered man still breathing, neither he nor the other members in the room haven noticed you in the doorway, “just give me what I want and we can wrap this up.”
Wheezing painfully through his broken nose, the man met Bucky’s steely gaze before fulfilling his request, “…I’m sorry…”
“Hm?” he leaned in pettily, “what was that?”
“I’m sorry,” the tied-up man repeated with a laboured huff.
“Okay, getting there,” he nodded, “what are you sorry for?”
“I’m sorry for killing Bruce…” the name rolled off Vladimir’s tongue like a crackle to a bonfire.
“And?” Bucky fished.
“For hurting you…”
“See? That wasn’t so bad now,” Barnes straightened back up, “an apology, a life for the one you took from me, and now there’s just one last thing left to do, and then we’re even,” he then took one step back and conjured his gun. Aiming it at the Russian, barely a second passed before a shot deafened everyone’s ears and a bullet blasted through the tied-up man’s arm, mirroring the injuries Bucky himself had sustained. The loud blast and the bloodcurdling scream that tore from Vladimir, however, caught you so off guard that a shriek slipped from you as you flinched, revealing your presence as everybody’s eyes suddenly shifted to train on you. Glancing over his shoulder, Bucky grunted, “what are you doing out? What is she doing out?” he shot his glare in the direction of Steve off to the side, “Rogers? Get her back into bed.”
“Yes, boss,” his right-hand man swiftly nodded before catching up to you in two long steps and seizing your arm.
And as you were dragged back to your doom, your eyes caught the tail end as Barnes let out a sigh and turned back around to face his victim, “now, where were we? Right! I believe the other one was right around here,” another gunshot echoed in the manor as he shot Vladimir’s arm once more, “and now, we can’t forget about the ones that only skimmed me, so get up and don’t fucking flinch, it’s on you if I hit your lung.”
The chain reunited with your ankle jingled as you twisted on the bed to cast your gaze out the window. Heavy rain hammered against the tall panes as the restless city twinkled through the darkness of the night. In the corner of the room, Steve watched up like a hawk as you continuously failed to find rest.
But then, just as you thought you felt your heartbeat return to a normal rhythm, the double doors burst open and in paced Bucky.
“Is she awake?” he huffed, though didn’t wait for an answer before he heatedly went on, “okay, great.”
As his rushed steps halted by the foot of your bed, the look in his eye caused your body to shudder.
“Rogers?” he kept his cold stare glued on you as he uttered, “go wait outside.”
Though you silently pleaded with your eyes for the mobster to stay, it was no use as Steve swiftly shut the doors behind him.
As the man before you then shifted, your wide eyes finally noticed the bundle of rope in his grasp as he began to unravel it. Scrambling back, you didn’t manage to crawl far away before Bucky caught the chain and yanked it hard enough to force your frame down towards him. Though your struggling finally fizzled out when the gangster pulled out his gun, the very gun he’d just ended a life with, and aimed it at your head to get you to comply.
“You know,” he uttered gruffly like a pent-up bull, “I’ve been nice, I’ve been real well behaved, kept my manners intact, been a goddamn gentleman,” the heavy weapon in his hand tilted slightly to emphasise his words, “but evidently, that’s not what you need to learn your fucking place,” he fumed before letting out a low exhale, “that’s alright…”
“Bucky, please,” tears blurred your vision as you held up your palms, “I-I understand, I’m sorry, you don’t have to do this.”
“Oh, but I do…” he sighed almost softly as he then kneeled down closer and let the tip of the cool barrel stroke your cheek, “…if you don’t break a horse, then she’ll never be tamed…” his eyes trailed after the line he drew before it flickered up to find your own, “now give me your hands,” he ordered and hesitantly, you shakily obeyed.
Since you couldn’t stay in your place, he simply had to tie you down better.
Unfurling the rope in his grasp, the mobster then fastened the cord around not only both of your wrists, but also your free ankle. After each of the tight knots were tied off, he yanked each appendage to the nearest corner of the bedframe, spreading your limbs till you looked like a starfish on the mattress.
Taking a step back to admire his handiwork, his fingers then dipped down into his pocket before a slight furrow found his brow as his touch didn’t locate the item he fished for. Placing the heavy gun in his palm down on the fireplace mantel, he then closed the distance towards the exit and cracked open the door just a smidge.
“Rogers?” he extended a hand through the sliver, “give me your knife,” to which a switchblade was swiftly placed in his palm, replacing his own which was still lodged deeply inside the corpse of the Russian in the other room.
Slamming the door behind him, he then crossed the room and silently began to cut your clothes off. The black gown you still wore came off with only a few slices, though your underwear, that he took his time with, slowly grazing the blade over your goosebump-ridden flesh before nicking the cotton clinging tightly to your frame.
Once you were bare before him, his feet shuffled back slightly as he let his stare soak up every millimetre of you.
A hand floated up to tug on his tie and loosen it slightly from around the collar still dappled with the blood of his enemy. Folding closed the knife with a faint flourish, he then sank down into the armchair directly behind him. The tattered panties he’d sliced from you were still clutched tightly in his hand as his eyes stayed glued upon your frame. Bringing the fabric up to his nose, his blue eyes then fluttered closed for a second as he breathed deeply, letting the scent of you flood his senses.
But as he stuffed the cotton down into his pocket and let his palm drift to somewhere else, your eyes grew even wider as you gasped, “what are you–”
“Just shut up, please,” he groaned, sounding like he was at his very last straw as he brashly began to rub himself through his pants, “just for one fucking second, don’t be a brat.”
Your jaw couldn’t help but hit the floor as he shamelessly pulled out his cock, letting the intimidating hardness spring free of its confines before he spit in his palm and enclosed his fist around the fat girth. You wanted to look away, you truly did, but you just couldn’t, a flaw he obviously noticed.
“You’re unbelievable…” he chuckled as his fist silkily stroked up and down his cock, the mixture of his own spit and the precum beading at the tip caused a sloppy melody to fill the room at each and every twist, “I mean, me being into you, that’s one thing, that makes sense, you’re the closest thing to magic that I’ve ever experienced, so of course that’s enough to get me going, but you… you’re the very textbook definition of a good girl and here you are pining after–, how was it again you put it? A superstitious fuck?”
Stunned at his accusation, you tried to tear your stare away, “I don’t know what you’re talking about…”
“Really? Well, I didn’t take you for a fool, but hey,” he tilted his head, “some folks are just that disconnected to their own feelings.”
Blinking back at him, you scoffed faintly, “you’re crazy, I’m not–…” but you couldn’t even say it out loud as you, deep down, knew that it was a lie.
“Oh yeah?” he cocked a brow, finding your flustered state amusing, “then why did you almost kiss me tonight?”
“I–…I was drunk.”
Letting out a dark chuckle, “alright, sure,” he then rose from his seat and crawled up on the bed with you before he buried his face between your parted thighs, “if you despise me so much, then why are you so fucking wet?” his hot breath fanned across your core.
“I’m not–,” you tried, though your attempt then fell short as he proved you wrong, reaching out his touch to tickle at your lightly and let the wet sounds of your arousal slosh into your soul.
“Hm?” the broad pad of his thumb gently brushed over your glistening petals, making them part for him, “if this isn’t because deep down you want me, then why? I’d love to hear you try and explain your way out of this one…”
“I-I–…” your eyes fluttered as you tried to fight the feeling, “I don’t…”
Laughing lightly through the scoff that then bubbled out of him, he averted his gaze and said, “okay, fine. You wanna play that game?” his eyes flickered back up to find yours, “if you need a bit of help in order to admit the truth, then that’s what you’ll get,” he uttered before suddenly stuffing two of his fingers inside of you.
Craning his neck, he tilted down to catch a taste. You tried to hold back your moans as his digits caressed you, but the softness of his velvety tongue came as such a shock that a little squeak managed to slip out past your lips.
“I mean, if it’s any consolation,” his stubbly chin glimmered with your essence as he retracted slightly to smirk, “I personally think it’s kinda cute that you have a crush on me like a little schoolgirl…”
He then sent his palm down upon your pussy in a wet smack, before repeating the action a couple of times to echo the jolt it shot through your body.
“Fuck…” he groaned in a low rumble, “you are so much more pretty awake…” he revealed casually, “sure, you make some cute noises in your sleep, but not like this,” you instinctually tried to stifle the uncontrollable whimpers that flowed from your lungs, “you should really be thanking me for all of the time and effort I’ve put into stretching this little hole of yours out,” his fingers continued to pump in and out of you, “if I hadn’t, well then you might just split in two when I finally get my cock in there.”
And as he leaned down to lap you up once more, you curled your toes as you felt him push you closer to the edge.
“Mr Barnes…” you attempted with an air of respect through your pants, “please don’t–…”
“Why? Because it makes you want to kiss me again?” he teasingly taunted you before continuing his persistent licks, bullying your clit into submission.
And as he kept going, even as you gasped, “stop–, a-ah!” he still kept his lips locked around your puffy pearl long after a gush of squirt wept around his fingers, keeping his efforts up till your hips were bucking back in sensitivity.
But when his kiss finally ceased, he let some of your juices, that had flooded into his mouth, trickle out past his lips and back down onto your pussy, “fuck…” his low groan nearly caused the whole room to rumble, “nasty little cunt…” before he slapped your throbbing core once more, watching as the last little trickle weakly leaked out and soaked the sheets below.
Lifting himself up to hover above your constricted form, you then squirmed as you felt him nudge the bulbous tip of him against you.
“Does the idea of liking, or even loving, someone like me scare you that much?” he uttered as he gathered up your slick and smeared it with his cock, “does it make you feel all wrong and icky inside that I of all people make you feel the way that you do?”
All of the air in your lungs was then suddenly knocked clean out as he, with one long stroke, slipped all the way inside, before pulling right back out to tap the weight of him against your poor clit with the hold he had at his base.
“You won’t spontaneously combust if you admit it out loud, you know…”
He repeated the motion, plugging you up completely before he denied your cunt the chance of getting used to the stretch.
“I just wanna hear you say it…”
And on the next time he filled you up to the brim, this time his hips didn’t retract.
Reeling as you fought to comprehend the manner his girth split you open, you gasped weakly, “I can’t…”
“Hmm…” his eyes above you narrowed slightly before he pointed out, “that’s not a no,” and he began to move, “finally getting somewhere…”
The gangster was in no way gentle as he started to fuck your pussy, the selfish force of it caused your body to jostle every time his heavy balls tapped against your slick skin, thereby conducting a lewd beat each time he slammed into you.
Lowing himself to get even closer to you, his nose ghosted against your own from the proximity. The gesture made you assume that he was about to press his lips to yours, though they never touched, even as your own instincts overwhelmed you and made you dizzily tilt up to try and close the gap, “nah-ah-ah,” he swiftly clicked his tongue and moved out of your reach, “admit the truth and then I’ll kiss you all you want.”
With his length still embedded deep within you, he sat back up. His fingers dented your hips as he grabbed onto them and then began to sink them harshly down against his own, lifting your frame entirely off of the mattress as he used you like a toy.
“Oh god…” you whimpered as your eyes fluttered down to notice the faint bulge that appeared in your lower abdomen, the thrusting imprint of his size visibly showing just how deep he buried himself inside of you.
Once he’d plopped your hips back down onto the bed, his hands then instead floated up to play with your tits, the rhythm he offered you causing them to jiggle in his palms. Though once he’d fiercely pinched your nipples and parted ways in a brief tap, his fingers then drifted further down south till his right hand found your puffy clit.
Casting his glance down as he rubbed your pearl, a smirk appeared on his lip as he spotted the way your cream coated his girth. Sweeping down to smear his touch against it, what he did next caught you so off guard that you jostled wildly in your binds in an attempt to hit him for his audacity.
“Ahh!” you yelped as he stuffed two of his fingers in your pussy alongside his already overwhelming girth, “Buck, no, it’s too much!”
But your squeak only caused him to chuckle as he stared down at the way your little hole struggled to take what he gave it, clinging around him so tightly that loud groans began to billow from him as he soon painted your insides white and pumped you full of his cum.
With heavy breaths, he withdrew his dick, though let his digits stay inside your warmth.
“Maybe in time you could become more than just my good luck charm…” he murmured as he flopped down to curl closer to your core, “would you like that?” he nipped at one of your thighs as his load slowly began to leak around his thick fingers, “does the idea of me falling down to my knees before you and declaring my undying love entice you, angel?”
“You’ll just have to do better,” he continued as his digits began to twist within you, “let me mould you and make you perfect for me,” another one of his fingers was stuffed inside of you, causing your eyes to flutter, “just let go,” he breathed, “shut off your brain and let it become a leaky mess just like your pussy already is for me,” he worked another digit into your creamy cunt before grazing the last one against your stretched out opening, “you don’t need to think, you just need to do exactly as I tell you to and everything will be okay,” his tone was soft as his thumb curled close to the others and sank into your pussy with a pop, “just break for me, it’s okay,” your body was shaking beneath him as his entire fist slowly twisted within you, “you’ll be so much more perfect ruined…”
Tears were streaming down your face as you unravelled once more, trembling violently as your pussy clamped down around his wide hand so tightly that it was forced all the way out, a drizzle of your nectar once again spraying out at the intensity.
“Alright!” you let out a sob, “alright… I–… I don’t understand it… but, I–…” you caught his eye and confessed, “ever since the moment I met you, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you… even when I fall asleep, it’s like you’re haunting me in my dreams…” a faint shake found your head as you blinked up at him through your blurry vision, “I don’t wanna feel this way. But–… I do.”
It seemed as though time stood still as Bucky stared down at you, an unreadable expression tinting his features before he finally shifted, slowly leaning down over you and inching closer before he finally pressed his lips to your own.
A faint whimper was muffled against his kiss as you felt the world crumble around you.
“That wasn’t so hard, was it now…” he breathed as he ended the soft peck, “say it again,” his hand slid over your jaw, “practice makes perfect.”
Blinking up into his eyes, you uttered from the bottom of your heart, “I am yours,” a single tear rolled down your cheek as you still trembled beneath him.
“Damn right you are…” his lips tilted into a smile.
Fishing out the borrowed switchblade that still rested within the gangster’s pocket, he then sliced through the ropes and constricted you.
Tangling your arms around his neck as you sat up, you captured his lips once again and felt his touch slide down under your ass before he scooped you into his lap. Your sore pussy wept against his cock, once again throbbing and hard as a rock against your core. As your tongue danced against his own, you couldn’t help but scramble even closer, pressing your body impossibly close to his own as you grinded down against him.
“You are mine,” he groaned as he manhandled your frame in his hold and sank you back down onto his fat dick, “you are my most prized possession,” your bodies met in sticky claps as the aftermath of the rough round moments before still oozed all over this one where passion crackled behind both of your own desperate efforts, “I will never let you go,” he blinked up into your eyes as you rode him, both of you clinging to each other as the end crept ever nearer, “always need you–,” his sentence was briefly broken up by a moan as you rolled your hips, your pussy gripping around him and squeezing him tightly, “need you by my side…”
Once your synced-up orgasms had both shuddered your senses and you were sharing each other’s breath, your eyes remained locked as his throbbing cock stayed buried deep within you.
“So, what now?” your chest rose and fell as you whispered into the night, the pitter-patter of rain splashing against your windows once again catching your attention as it swept over and mingled with your laboured pants of breath.
Not shifting his gaze, his eyes briefly scanned your own in search of any ounce of deception, before his fingers dipped down into his pocket and conjured a tiny key, “now,” and he stretched down to undo the chain at your ankle. The click of the lock felt like a gasp of real air was finally filling your depraved lungs, “I take you to my room,” and he manoeuvred you around to slink one arm in behind your knees while the other stayed fast at your spine. As he rose from the bed, he plucked you up with him as well, carrying you in his hold as he exited the bedroom.

Super easy and cheap devotional acts for beginners.
A nice cup and some clean, fresh, water on the altar can often be all you need for daily offerings
Grow a plant on your altar, use your weekly watering as a devotional act. Hermes is currently helping my peace lily grow :)
Draw their sigil on your nails and then paint over them with nail polish that matches their color correspondences.
If you can’t acquire alcohol for your deities (wine, vodka etc) because you’re too young, white vinegar also works. The quality we’re looking for is the purification aspect. White vinegar is natural, antibacterial and never goes bad. You can leave it on your altar until it evaporates if you want.
If you work with a deity involved with self love like Aphrodite, investing a little more time into your skin care and scent can be very rewarding. Nothing super boujie, it can be as simple as getting some nice smelling lotion at the dollar store.
Food and water offerings don’t have to be external, especially if you’re in the broom closet and don’t have an altar. Reserve the first bite of your meal for your deity. Savour its taste while you think about them. Pour yourself a crisp glass of cold water and guzzle it as a devotional act.
Use a washable or dry erase marker to draw sigils on your shower wall for bath rituals. It’ll come right off when you’re done.
Tea bags are just bags of dried herbs. You can use these as offerings or draw sigils on them and burn them for witchcraft. No one is ever suspicious about a little tea. Adding a tea bag to your water offerings also gives them an extra kick.
A couple dollars at the thrift store will take you a long way. I love thrifting items because they’re usually well loved. I especially like thrifting spirituality books that past practitioners have written in. Sometimes my deities communicate with me through the books that are available on any given day. If I was just talking to Leviathan about the power of water and I see a book about Hydromancy, I know that he’s sending me a sign. Like, 90% of the books Lucifer has sent me popped up at the thrift store. Most expensive one was $7.99. (and I tag swapped it for 2.99 😊 thanks, Hermes-
and on this note, literally steal. Not from small local thrift stores, but I mean this with my whole chest, steal from Value Village. If you can sneakily swap a tag and get something for cheaper literally do it. Value Village gets all their inventory for free I literally do not care. Corporate thrift stores don’t deserve rights. I steal from Value Village as a devotional act to Hermes 😊 lmao )
If you don’t have money to spend on really nice paintings and posters of your deities for your altar, start buying books about them. It’s a double win. A book about Greek religion will certainly have multiple beautiful sculptures and paintings of Aphrodite that I can cut out and put on my wall. A book about angels might have a cool painting of Lucifer. Books about Goddesses, ancient religions, anthropology, astrology etc. You get the opportunity to learn, and if it’s a book you don’t particularly care too much for, you can take it apart for imagery. People ask me all the time where I got all of my paintings and pictures from. BOOKS.
Does your deity have a kind of complicated sigil that you love but you also kinda hate redrawing every other day? Sorry Cerberus (Naberius) I love you but that sigil is so complicated babe.
Learn how to block print! It’s very simple. You get a block of linoleum (usually pretty cheap, I think mine were like $5) , some ink (~$10), and a carving tool (varies depending), and make a sigil stamp! All you gotta do is draw your sigil and carve it out nicely one time. You can still bless it and imbue it with your energy, and you can easily put it on prayers, talismans etc.
Chalk is your best friend. Use it to draw sigils on the floor or wall that can easily be wiped away. You can imbue special chalk and use it for casting circles if you don’t like the mess of salt.

🏎️ author's note!
f1 mingyu f1 mingyu f1 mingyu f1 mingyu f1 mingyu f1 mingyu f1 mingyu f1 mingyu 👹👹 that is all.
There are some names you never really outrun.
In Monza, mine is whispered like a ghost story.
"YN's back?"
As if I were a curse.
It was as if I hadn't been here the whole time. Just hidden in the shadows of champagne flutes and pit lane secrets.
It's been seven years since the crash. Seven years since my father's car went up in flames on lap forty-two, since I stood in the paddock and watched the marshals throw up the red flag, my throat raw from screaming. Seven years since I promised myself I'd never set foot near a racetrack again.
And yet
I'm sitting in my apartment in Barcelona, staring at the black envelope the courier sent this morning. My name... MY name, is handwritten across the front in sharp, arrogant strokes.
The seal on the back is red wax. Embossed with a crest I know too well: MGK.
Kim Mingyu.
I don't have to open it. I already know what it is.
An invitation.
It's not the first time he's tried.
Mingyu's been sending messages for months. Quiet ones, clever ones. I ignored them all. The roses in Maranello? Trashed. The paddock pass in Milan? Returned. His call after the driver's gala last winter? I let it ring until the sound died.
He doesn't take rejection well.
He never has.
But this... this is different.
This is personal. The handwriting tells me that. Mingyu could've had a PR assistant draft something polished, clean, and cold. He didn't. He wanted me to know it was him. That it's always been him.
God, he's insufferable. He was always so sure of himself. The face of MGK Racing, the most aggressive driver on the grid, the fastest pit exit on record, and the charm that makes even my most jaded friends blush.
But beneath the swag and the tailored suits, there's something else. I see it every time his name flashes across the ticker. Every time he clutches a champagne bottle on the podium like he owns the world.
He wants to be a legend.
And legends always come with ghosts.
I open the envelope before I can talk myself out of it.
"Monza
Saturday. Pre-qualifying. I want you on the balcony.
Come see what a real legacy looks like."
– M
My teeth grit around the nerve of it. I can hear his voice in my head.
Deep, amused, cocky.
Come see what a real legacy looks like.
What a bastard.
I should burn it. Rip it into a hundred pieces and let the ashes swirl over my terrace like the memory of my father's last race. But I don't.
I set the letter down on the counter and pour myself a drink. Neat. No ice.
Because here's the thing about running. You can only go so far before someone catches up. And Kim Mingyu? He's fast. Faster than he looks. Faster than he has any right to be. And for better or worse, he's the only driver who's ever looked me in the eyes like he knows.
He knows what it costs.
Knows what it takes.
Knows that underneath all my disdain and quiet exile, I miss it.
I miss the sound.
The roar.
The rush.
I miss my father's world, even though it tore mine apart.
And maybe, just maybe, I miss Mingyu.
Not that I'd ever admit that. Especially not to him.
I set up the private jet for the next morning. One-way.
I pack like I'm going to war. Black sunglasses, leather jacket, zero patience. If he wants me at Monza, fine. I'll show up. But I'm not coming back as some wide-eyed fan with nostalgia in my throat.
I'm YN.
Daughter of the greatest to ever touch the wheel.
Raised in pit lanes and championship parties.
Trained to spot a liar in a sponsor's suit before he finishes shaking your hand.
And if Kim Mingyu wants to play this game, he better be ready to lose.
Because I may have left the track, but, I never left the fight.
⸻
I land in Italy under a bruised sky. The airport car is already waiting. Matte black, sleek. The driver barely says a word as we weave through traffic and out toward the circuit. Every kilometer closer, my pulse climbs. It's muscle memory, adrenaline, and fury.
Nostalgia is dangerous.
So is desire.
I spot the MGK paddock before we even pull in. Bright red with gold trim, obnoxiously regal. Just like him.
And there he is.
Kim Mingyu.
Leaning against the railing like a goddamn movie poster. Fireproofs around his waist, white shirt clinging to sweat and arrogance. Sunglasses tucked into the neck like he doesn't need them to blind you.
He sees me before I step out of the car. Of course he does.
A slow, knowing grin cuts across his face.
"Thought you'd be taller," I say, chin high as I step into view.
He laughs, low and amused and pushes off the rail.
"And I thought you'd keep running."
I smile without warmth. "Guess we're both disappointed."
But the way he looks at me.
Like I'm the finish line and the starting gun all at once.
That's the problem.
That's what will ruin us both.
The paddock smells like rubber and adrenaline.
It hits me the moment I step past the barricades, heat rising from the asphalt, the thrum of engines testing their limits, the unmistakable pulse of a sport that's more religion than competition. A place where gods are made in milliseconds and ghosts live in the shadows of tire marks.
I shouldn't have come.
I feel how the staff look at me. Half recognition, half disbelief. Like they're not sure if I'm real. I keep my sunglasses on and my expression locked, but it's all muscle memory now. Every step toward the MGK garage pulls something tight in my chest.
The last time I stood here, I was a daughter mourning a legacy. Today, I'm just trying to survive one.
"Still walking like you own the grid," Mingyu mutters beside me, voice smug as sin. He's close, closer than he needs to be. "Nice to know some things haven't changed."
I don't look at him.
"I walk like someone who knows where the hell she's going," I reply, cool and clean.
"Right. Right into my garage," he says with a grin.
"Temporary lapse in judgment."
He laughs. "You keep saying that like you didn't get on a plane for me."
I stop and pivot to face him. "Let's get one thing straight, Kim. I didn't come here for you. I came for the car. For the circuit. For the noise. You? You're just the distraction in the driver's seat."
His smile doesn't falter, but his eyes narrow just a little. "And yet, here you are. Watching me work."
I hate how calm he sounds. How sure. Like he's already won some battle I didn't agree to fight.
We step into the garage, and the world sharpens.
The MGK car. His car is a brutal, beautiful machine. Polished red with razor-edge aerodynamics and barely contained fury. She looks fast even when standing still, the kind of car that doesn't ask for forgiveness, just blood.
I run my fingers across the rear wing casually. Careless.
"You really trust her?" I ask.
Mingyu leans against the wall, arms crossed, watching me like I'm part of the engine. "With my life."
"Big words."
"Big machine."
I glance over my shoulder. "She won't save you from a mistake."
"I don't make them."
That gets my attention. I turn, eyebrows raised. "That's a bold thing to say in front of a legacy."
His gaze drops to my mouth before snapping back up. "You think you know this world because you were born into it."
"No," I say, stepping closer just to see if he flinches. He doesn't. "I know this world because it burned itself into me. I know the way engines scream before they seize. I know the color of smoke that means a fire's already started. And I know when a driver is tempting fate just to see if it flinches."
"You think that's me?"
"I think you want to be a myth. And you're arrogant enough to die trying."
We're too close now. There's a beat of silence so thick it hums.
Mingyu's voice drops. "You sound a little like you care."
"I don't."
He leans in, so close I can feel the breath between us. "Then why are you shaking?"
I shove past him without answering.
⸻
The balcony is tucked above the paddock, and there is a private viewing box with tinted glass, which is the best line of sight to the Ascari chicane. The seat they've reserved for me still has the waxy shine of never having been used. Mingyu's initials are stitched into the headrest beside mine.
Of course they are.
He wants me here. Wants me to see him. Wants me to choke on the legacy he's building, lap by lap.
Petty.
Arrogant.
Exactly the kind of man who shouldn't interest me.
But when the pit lights go green, and he pulls out of the garage like the devil himself is chasing him, I can't look away.
He's so fast.
Not just in speed but in intention. Every corner he devours is personal. Every straight is a dare. The way he handles the car. It's not finesse, it's command. A raw, ruthless kind of beauty.
He pushes wide at Parabolica, kisses the edge of track limits, and instead of correcting, he leans into it. Dancing with danger like he's immune to consequences.
Jesus.
I hate how impressed I am.
Worse. I hate that I expected it.
Because no one talks about Mingyu's hands without also talking about what he does with them behind the wheel, he doesn't just drive, he hunts. He takes every apex, every braking zone, and every rival on the track like they owe him something.
I lean back in my chair, teeth clenched.
This isn't a boy playing at F1. This is a man building an empire.
And god help me, I understand exactly what that costs.
⸻
After practice, I stay put.
I don't go down. I don't clap. I don't run to the garage to praise him like the other engineers and PR vultures. I sip my drink. I watch the replays. And when someone knocks on the glass behind me, I don't have to turn around to know it's him.
The door swings open.
He walks in like he owns the air I'm breathing. Sweat-slick, flushed, radiating heat and pride and something untouchable. He's still in his suit, gloves half-peeled, fireproofs unzipped to the waist.
"You came," he says simply.
I nod. "You drove."
He walks over, grabs a water bottle, and downs half before speaking again. "What did you think?"
I don't answer right away. I let the silence stretch, let it bite.
"You're fast," I admit, finally.
He grins.
"But you already know that."
"Sure," he says, closing the gap between us. "But I wanted you to say it."
I narrow my eyes. "Careful, Mingyu. If you keep needing validation from me, I might start thinking you care what I think."
His smile fades. Not completely, but enough.
"I do," he says quietly.
It's too honest. Too soon. I look away.
"No, you don't," I say, smirking. "You care about being seen. You care about the myth. And I'm just a convenient mirror for your ego."
He takes a slow step forward, then another. His voice is lower now. Steady. "You think this is ego?"
"I know it is."
"I think it's something else."
"Let me guess. Fate?"
"No," he says, voice like gravel. "Obsession."
My throat tightens.
He doesn't touch me. Just stands there. Looking.
"You don't hate me, YN," he says. "You hate that you left. You hate that I'm here. You hate that you still feel something when I drive."
I breathe through my nose. "I hate a lot of things, Mingyu."
"But not me."
I don't answer.
Because I don't know if I can lie to his face when he's this close.
The spell breaks when the second knock comes. This one sharper, more insistent. Mingyu doesn't move at first, but then the door creaks again.
"YN?"
A voice I half recognize. I turn.
It's Marcus, a mechanic from a neighboring team. Fresh out of the garage, still wiping grease from his fingers with a rag tucked into his waistband. His eyes widen when he sees me.
"Holy shit," he says, breathless. "You're here."
"Looks that way," I murmur, stepping away from where Mingyu had been moments before. He's gone again, vanished like smoke.
"Didn't think I'd see you at a race again. Especially this one."
I give him a one shoulder shrug, careful not to show my cards. "Monza’s hard to resist."
More people show up. Word spreads fast in this world. First one of the engineers I used to work with. Then a junior team manager. Then a marketing intern I think I once shared a cigarette with on a balcony in Singapore. They come in waves, all with the same expression: half shock, half curiosity.
"What brings you back?"
"You working again?"
"Writing a piece?"
"You here with someone?"
I deflect. I smile. I lie through my teeth and offer just enough to sound real.
"Freelance consulting. Just dipping back in. One-off project. Not sure if it'll stick."
They nod like they understand. They don't.
Someone snaps a photo. Then another. I barely register it, floating through small talk with the grace of a politician and the detachment of a ghost.
Then a voice cuts through the noise.
"Drivers, to your cars."
Everyone perks up. The energy shifts. A ripple of anticipation floods the paddock.
I excuse myself and make my way to the balcony. Elevated, just removed enough from the chaos. I slide on a pair of sunglasses and settle against the railing, heart rate rising despite myself.
Pre-qualifying. Twenty laps. Track temperature is brutal. Pressure higher than most of them admit.
The pitlane opens, and one by one, the cars snake onto the grid. Engines purr and roar and scream in protest. Mechanics scatter. Strategists bark last minute data through radios.
And then there's him. Car #9.
He rolls into his slot like he's settling into a throne. Calm. Collected. Untouchable.
The lights count down. Red. Red. Red. Red. Red.
And then
Out.
The sound is instantaneous and deafening. They shoot off like bullets, hugging corners with ruthless precision. I watch from above, tracking their formation. The front pack jostles for position, tires squealing as they brake too late, accelerate too early.
Mingyu hangs back for the first few laps. Watching. Calculating.
It's lap seven when he starts his climb.
A clean overtake at Sainte Devote. A bold move at Mirabeau that earns a gasp from the crowd. By lap ten, he's top three. By lap fourteen, he's trading seconds with the leader. And by lap seventeen, he makes the move.
A slingshot on the straight, barely legal. Inches to spare. DRS wide open.
Pole.
Just like that.
The final lap is pure theatre. He doesn't need to prove anything, but he does anyway. Throwing sparks through the tunnel, flirting with disaster at the chicane. Showboating. Glorious.
When the checkered flag waves, the name on the board is his.
Pole position: Kim Mingyu.
Time: 1:11.330
The box explodes in celebration. His team goes wild. I hear it echo even from here.
I watch the replay. Frame by frame. Slow-motion heroism. Precision, madness, beauty.
The paddock buzzes with post-qualifying static. Reporters crowding around flashing cameras, pit crews celebrating in their own corners, and the air practically vibrating with ego and exhaust.
And at the center of it all, like always, stands him.
Dripping sweat, champagne, and audacity.
His suit's peeled down to his waist, his fireproof undershirt sticking in all the right places, dark hair pushed back like he just walked out of a photo shoot instead of a cockpit. Every angle is clean, curated. The smirk, the wink to the camera, the stupid little fist pump.
I don't move.
I don't clap.
Not when his name lights up the leaderboard, not when the pit crew erupts like someone detonated joy, and definitely not when he glances over his shoulder like he's looking for someone.
Because I know exactly who he's looking for.
And I'll be damned if I give him the satisfaction of meeting that gaze first.
⸻
I'm leaning against the side of the hospitality tent, holding a bottle of water and a chip on my shoulder sharp enough to slice through carbon fiber.
He finds me anyway.
"Didn't see you in parc fermé," he says, approaching.
"Didn't need to be there," I reply, cool. "The cameras were doing enough worshipping for the both of us."
He grins like it's a compliment. "You sound jealous."
"Of what? Your thirst trap victory lap?"
He steps closer. Too close. "Of being the fastest on the grid."
"I've been the fastest," I say, looking him dead in the eye. "And I didn't need a camera crew to validate it."
"Ouch," he laughs, one hand over his chest. "Still bitter?"
"No," I say smoothly. "Just bored."
His smirk twitches, and I know I've landed a hit.
But Mingyu, the arrogant bastard that he is, never backs down. He tilts his head, dark eyes narrowing with something almost curious. Or maybe hunger.
"You still talk like you're the one with a seat," he says.
"You still talk like you're untouchable."
"I just secured the pole at one of the most technical tracks on the circuit. If I'm not untouchable, who is?"
"Someone who doesn't throw away a lead at Monaco."
That wipes the smirk off his face for a half-second. Good.
But then, he laughs. Quietly. Like he's indulging me.
"Still keeping tabs on my stats, huh?"
"I keep tabs on hazards," I say, voice low. "And you drive like you're one bad decision away from becoming one."
He leans in. "Funny. I always thought I reminded you of someone."
The words slice, even though I see them coming.
I stand straighter. "Don't."
His smile turns razor sharp. "Why not? You've been pretending this weekend is just a casual drop by, like you didn't grow up in these paddocks like your blood isn't still fifty percent ethanol and carbon brake dust."
"You think bringing up my dad earns you points?"
"I think it's the truth," he says, quiet and cutting. "And I think it scares the hell out of you."
I say nothing. Not because he's right, but because I know if I open my mouth, I'll say something that tastes too much like grief.
He must sense it because instead of pressing harder, he pivots.
"You remember Spa?"
Of course, I remember Spa.
The humid summer heat. The taste of victory is one lap away. The night before his first junior race, when he couldn't stop pacing, I told him to either get in the car or get over himself.
He thinks bringing that up softens me.
It doesn't.
"You mean the weekend you nearly totaled your car trying to impress the media?" I ask. "Yeah, I remember."
"You were in my garage the entire time," he says, stepping closer. "Even when everyone else left."
"I stayed because you wouldn't shut up," I say. "Your whole team looked like they wanted to throttle you."
"You didn't."
"I should have."
"You called me a glorified kart driver with a God complex."
"And you still asked me to sit in your car the next morning."
He laughs, and for a second, it's too easy to remember that summer sun and his stupid grin, the way he looked at me like I already belonged in his world.
But I don't now.
Not in this one.
I take a step back. "Spa was a long time ago."
"Not for me."
I narrow my eyes. "Still clinging to every compliment I gave you before puberty finished hitting?"
"You weren't exactly stingy with them."
"You had one good overtake."
"It was beautiful, and you know it."
"It was reckless and nearly illegal."
"That's how I knew you'd notice."
The air tightens between us.
He's toeing the line. Not crossing it, but daring me to.
"I'm not here to relive Spa," I say. "And I'm not here for you."
Mingyu nods once, jaw tight. "Keep telling yourself that. You still showed."
I turn to leave, but his voice catches me mid step.
"You know," he says, voice cooler now, "you can pretend all you want. But you're not bored, and you're not above it. You still feel it. The adrenaline. The pull. The need to win. You're just pissed it's me in the seat and not you."
I freeze.
He knows exactly what he's doing.
"Here's the difference between us," I say slowly, turning back. "You drive to be loved. I drove to win. I don't need to be anyone's poster child."
"And I don't need to dig up a dead man's legacy to prove I belong here."
That hits harder than he expects.
He knows it. I see it in the brief flicker of regret that crosses his face.
But I don't give him the satisfaction of seeing it land.
I smile. Cold. Clean. Surgical.
"Pole position suits you, Kim," I say. "Let's see how long you hold it."
Then I walk off, my spine straight and my heart a war drum.
Because the worst part isn't that he's good.
It's that I still want to see how far he'll fall.
And worse, how much of me would go with him.
⸻
Rooftop parties in Monza are always overdone.
Too much champagne, too many rich boys pretending they aren't terrified of crashing tomorrow, and music pulsing just loud enough to drown out the fear of failure. Everything glitters here. Skin, sweat, ambition.
I almost don't come.
But when a media liaison sends me a smug little "Hope to see you at the rooftop party tonight ;)" text, I throw on my sharpest heels and arrive ten minutes late with a perfectly timed smile and someone else's arm around my waist.
Not a date. Not really.
Just someone dangerous looking enough to make people look twice when we walk in.
Including Kim Mingyu.
I feel his stare the moment we step out of the elevator. It latches onto me before the doors even fully open. Across the rooftop, flanked by half the grid and a circle of admirers, he stands with a drink in his hand and fury behind his eyes.
Good.
I tilt my chin, ignoring him. My companion, Luca, some former endurance driver turned influencer, leans down to say something near my ear. I don't catch all of it. I'm too focused on the way Mingyu's grip tightens around his glass.
Petty? Maybe.
But if he gets to walk around this circuit like he owns every inch of it, then I get to remind him I'm not one of those inches.
I mingle, laugh at things that aren't funny, and dance with Luca, knowing full well who's watching. The music pulses through the rooftop, rich bass and heat twining through my bloodstream like jet fuel. But after a while, it becomes too much. The noise, the humidity, the attention.
So, I slip away.
Out onto the balcony where the air is finally calm, quiet, and mine. Below, the streets of Monza glint like they're made of diamonds. Somewhere out there, the race track weaves between buildings like a heartbeat.
It still lives in me. The pulse of it. The memory.
I close my eyes.
"You like bringing someone new to every event?"
I don't turn around.
"Do you like policing who I arrive with?"
His voice is closer now. Still sharp, still smug. But a little quieter.
"I just think it's funny," Mingyu says. "You say you've left this world behind, but you keep showing up to these things like you never left."
I finally face him. He's leaning against the railing, looking too good in a black button down and sleeves rolled just high enough to show his forearms.
"Maybe I just missed the champagne," I say flatly. "Or the egos."
He chuckles, gaze flicking down before finding my eyes again. "Is that why you brought Luca? To stroke yours?"
I cross my arms. "He's harmless."
"Yeah," he says, voice sharper than before. "Exactly."
We're quiet for a moment. The wind lifts strands of my hair, and neither of us moves.
Then, softer
"I shouldn't have brought up your dad."
I freeze.
It's not the apology that catches me off guard. It's the way he says it. Like it's been sitting in his chest too long, getting heavier every time he breathed around it.
"I was pissed," he goes on. "You got under my skin. You always do."
"Not a great excuse."
"I know."
I study him. He's not hiding behind a smirk now. There's something almost raw in the way he looks at me.
"You think it scares me," I say. "This place. The cars. The legacy. But it doesn't."
"Then what does?"
I look at him.
"You."
That wasn't supposed to slip.
I bite down on the inside of my cheek, but it's already in the air between us, hanging heavy like mist before a storm.
Mingyu stares at me like he's afraid to breathe wrong.
"You mean that?" he asks, and it's the most unsure I've ever heard him sound.
I laugh, but it's hollow. "God, don't get cocky about it."
"I'm not."
"You will."
"I won't if you stay."
"I'm not staying."
"Then why did you come?"
"Because I'm an idiot."
He takes a step forward. "You're not."
"I can't do this."
"We're not doing anything—"
"No," I snap, stepping back. "You want to pretend like it's all part of the game. Like the flirting, the fighting, the looks, they're just banter. But it's not, Mingyu. It never was."
"I know that."
"Do you?"
"Of course I do," he says, and it's breathless now. "Why do you think I'm always looking for you? In every damn room? Why do you think I hate it when you're with anyone else? Or when you act like none of this matters?"
I shake my head. "You don't get to say that. Not after Spa. Not after last year."
"That wasn't—"
"You don't get to make me feel like I walked away from something sacred when you're the one who turned it into a circus."
He flinches.
"I'm not some ghost hanging around the paddock for nostalgia," I add, voice rising. "I loved this once. I loved you once. And you let the spotlight eat both of us alive."
He's quiet. Too quiet.
And the silence is suddenly unbearable.
"I shouldn't have come," I say, stepping away.
"YN—"
But I don't stop.
I push past the door and back into the party, slipping into the noise and crowd before he can see how much my hands are shaking.
⸻
I wake up to sunlight bleeding through unfamiliar curtains and a hangover of emotion I can't shake.
Three missed calls. Five unread messages.
MINGYU:
I shouldn't have let you walk away. Can we talk? Please. You still there? I didn't mean to hurt you.
I toss the phone face down on the hotel bed and press my hands to my face.
The night plays back in flashes. His voice is softer than I've ever heard it. My own, sharp and cracked at the edges. The look in his eyes when I said you scared me.
I shouldn't have said that.
I shouldn't have said any of it.
But it's too late to take it back and too soon to face what it means.
By the time I reach the paddock, it's already alive. Mechanics are moving like clockwork, engineers are barking data, and fans are pressed to barricades in a blur of color and flags. Race day in Monza is unlike any other, with tight corners, blind apexes, and no room for error.
I know this circuit like muscle memory.
I know Mingyu better.
He's usually calm on race days. Sharp, focused. He jokes with the crew and leans against the pit wall like it's just another day in paradise. But today? Something's off.
He barely glances at the camera during his grid walk. He doesn't even acknowledge the announcer calling his name. His jaw's tight, mouth a line carved in stone as he slides into the cockpit.
I stand off to the side, arms crossed, sunglasses hiding everything I can't control. I tell myself I don't care. That I'm just here because my name still gets me into these places, not because I'm holding my breath as the lights go red.
But when they go out...
He launches like he's chasing something he'll never catch.
Lap after lap, he's off.
Late on turn in. Snapping into corners, pushing too hard on exits, and overcorrecting in ways he never does. He's still fast, of course he is, but it's not the way Mingyu drives. It's frantic, reckless. Emotional.
And that's what scares me.
"He's not listening to strategy," someone mutters near the pit wall. "Keeps overriding."
"Tyres won't last at this rate."
I inch closer, ears straining for the radio feed I know too well.
"Box, box, box," comes the call.
He doesn't answer.
On the next lap, he finally peels into the pit lane. Too hot, too fast and skids a little over the line.
When his car screeches to a halt, someone reaches for my wrist.
"Team principal wants you in the garage," they say. "Now."
"I'm not—"
"He asked."
I don't ask why.
The second I enter the garage, the air shifts. Controlled chaos. Tire guns scream. Mechanics swarm. Mingyu's helmet reflects the lights above like a mirror, but I don't need to look at his face to see how angry he is.
He won't look at me.
Not once.
He pulls out of the pit box with a screech and a flash of red taillight, leaving black streaks behind.
The pit wall murmurs.
"His sector time dropped again."
"Something's wrong."
No one says my name. No one asks why I'm here. But I see the looks. I feel the unspoken tension curl around my ribcage like wire.
I turn to the monitor. The feed tracks his car as it dances through Casino Square, close, too close to the barriers. He's fast. Too fast. Trying to bleed something out of himself with every turn.
"He's going to bin it if he doesn't calm down," a voice says behind me.
I press a fist to my lips.
This is my fault.
I shouldn't have gone to the party. I shouldn't have brought someone else. I shouldn't have let things go that far on the balcony. Shouldn't have said his name like it meant more than it should.
Because it does.
And I know that. I've always known that.
Lap 42.
He clips the inside curb through the Nouvelle chicane. A puff of tire smoke, but he recovers.
Barely.
The engineer tries again. "Mingyu, you need to cool the tires. Ease through Sector 2."
Silence.
My heart thunders like a race start.
The camera angle shifts and catches him through the tunnel, just a blur of speed and shadow, and I swear, even in that silence, I can feel the weight of his fury.
This isn't about the race anymore.
This is about me.
I turn away from the screen and press my back to the wall, chest tight.
He's trying to outdrive a heartbreak we haven't even admitted to and trying to put distance between what we said and what we meant. But this track doesn't forgive emotion. It doesn't give you space to figure it out mid lap.
It punishes.
It ends careers.
It took my father.
And if Mingyu doesn't get out of his head, it might take him too.
I press the headset closer, voice shaking. "Tell him to stop driving angry."
The engineer glances at me. "He's not listening."
"Then make him."
He hesitates.
I close my eyes.
"Tell him," I whisper, "I'm still here."
The air in the garage is suffocating.
I can feel the tension crackling through it like static. Engineers hunch closer to monitors, eyes darting between telemetry and tire temps, sector splits and radio chatter. Everyone's whispering, but no one's saying the only thing they're all thinking.
He's going to crash.
Lap 65 of 78.
Monza is unforgiving. It always has been. One lapse, one moment too late or too early, and it's all over. Mingyu's been walking that razor-thin edge for almost an hour now, and each lap is just sharpening the blade.
He still hasn't responded to strategy.
Not since Lap 42.
Not since he saw me in the garage.
I stare at the screen in front of me. My fists clenched, feeling every heartbeat in my throat as his car screeches into Tabac, too close, his rear end twitching dangerously.
"He's overdriving," someone says. "He's gonna cook those mediums before the flag."
"Mingyu, box if you can't stabilize the rear," the race engineer tries again. "You're losing the back every other turn. We can adjust."
Silence.
Again.
They're running out of options.
I'm already moving before I realize it.
The headset's warm from someone else's head, but I don't care. I snatch it off the rack, and the team principal turns toward me like I've grown a second head.
"He's not listening to anyone," I say. "So let me try."
There's a pause, half a second of hesitation, then he nods once.
I don't wait.
My thumb hits the comm switch, and I speak before I can talk myself out of it.
"Mingyu."
Nothing.
"Why are you driving like a damn idiot?!"
Still nothing. But I know he hears me. I know he's probably gripping the wheel harder now, jaw clenched, cursing me inside his helmet. I press harder.
"You're throwing away a podium because of me? Seriously? Because you can't get your head out of your ass long enough to breathe through a corner?"
A hiss of static. Not a response. Not yet. But I feel the tension rise from the track through the screen.
I close my eyes. Lower my voice.
"I know why you're doing this."
Sector one—green.
He's pushing harder. Too hard.
"You think I don't see you? You think I haven't seen you from the beginning?"
"I've spent my entire life running from this world. From the noise, the risk, the pain—"
My voice wavers.
"I watched it take someone I loved and twist it into a legacy I didn't want. And then you... God, then you…”
"You were arrogant, infuriating, loud as hell, and you made me remember what it was like to care."
The garage is dead silent now. Every screen, every eye, locked on the feed. No one's even pretending to look away.
"You made me care about something again, and I hate you for that."
I exhale through my teeth. Every part of me is shaking.
"But if you crash that car, Mingyu, if you throw it away, don't you dare think for one second I won't hate myself more."
A breath.
Then, finally, after laps of nothing—
"You had me at Mingyu."
His voice is breathless. Rough. Like gravel over a fire. But it's there. And he's there.
I press a fist to my mouth as tears threaten the corners of my eyes.
Lap 73.
He steadies.
His cornering evens out, his braking returns to rhythm, and suddenly, he's in Sector 2 like he owns it. Purple time. Fastest lap of the race. He overtakes in the tunnel with a clean sweep that draws a gasp from the team.
Someone cheers behind me. The garage erupts.
He's back.
He's himself again.
"Mingyu, you're P2 now," the engineer says quickly. "Perez is 1.3 seconds ahead."
"Copy," Mingyu breathes. "Let's go get him."
Lap 76. The fight is on.
I stand frozen, watching him dance through the circuit like the car is an extension of his spine like nothing ever went wrong. A clean overtake in the hairpin. One wheel to the inside at Rascasse. He's right on Perez's tail now.
Final lap.
The crowd is on their feet. Cameras flash. My heart is in my throat as Mingyu comes down into Mirabeau—
—and that's when it happens.
A puff of smoke.
"Yellow flag, Sector 1."
I slam the headset against my ear. "What the hell happened?!"
"Left rear," the engineer mutters. "Tyre failure. He's still moving. He's trying to hold on."
My knees nearly give out as I see it.
Mingyu's car is dragging. The rear's gone soft, wobbling dangerously as he limps through the turn, still trying to defend P2. Sparks fly from the undercarriage. He's still driving.
He's still fighting.
My voice breaks. "Just finish. Please, just get across the line."
He doesn't answer.
He doesn't need to.
He's never stopped.
And as he crosses the finish line. P4, holding on with sheer grit and fire in his chest. I realize I've been holding my breath for the last minute.
The garage explodes around me. Mechanics shout. Hands are on heads. Everyone is debriefing and analyzing.
But I'm frozen in place, staring at the screen, watching his car slow, watching the replay again and again.
He heard me.
He stayed.
But I can't help the thought clawing up my throat like guilt—
What if I hadn't said anything at all?
Engines still roar in the distance as the last few cars trickle into the paddock. The smell of rubber and fuel clings to everything, metal, asphalt, even my skin. People shout in five different languages around me, team radios squawk with chatter, mechanics wave carbon fiber flags in the air, and photographers are already climbing barricades like vultures.
And then I see him.
Helmet off. Hair sweat-damp and curled at the nape. His suit unzipped just past his collarbones, the fireproof undershirt clinging to every muscle in his chest like it was poured on. His jaw's locked, mouth tight, eyes cold. Sunglasses hang useless in his grip.
P4. Dragged a car home on one tire like it was war and he refused to lose.
He hasn't seen me yet.
He's surrounded by engineers, people slapping his back like a war hero, cameras in his face, boom mics chasing his voice as he mutters answers to media questions I can't hear.
I should leave.
This is his moment. Not mine.
But I can't move.
I'm not sure I could even if I wanted to.
And then he turns.
Our eyes lock.
Everything else goes silent.
He doesn't look triumphant. He doesn't even look relieved. He looks like a storm holding back landfall. Tight, too still, like one wrong move could shatter the restraint he's holding onto by sheer will.
I watch the muscle in his jaw flex once. Twice.
Then he starts walking toward me.
The crowd parts for him like it knows.
Suddenly, I can't breathe.
His footsteps echo against the pavement, steady and brutal, until he's just a few feet away. We're still technically inside the barrier, but this is Mingyu, so rules bend the second he decides they should.
He stops.
Too close.
He doesn't speak.
So I do.
"You didn't even flinch."
He raises a brow, voice rough. "You did."
I blink, throat tight. "You were about to lose the rear at Mirabeau."
"I did lose the rear. You just didn't notice because you were too busy yelling at me through the headset like you were calling a damn opera."
My mouth falls open. "I was trying to save your life."
"I was trying to win a race."
"And almost died doing it."
His mouth curves, but it's not a smile. It's something dark and sharp.
"Worth it."
I shove his shoulder. Hard.
He doesn't budge.
"Stop saying shit like that!" I snap. "You think it's brave? That it's romantic? It's stupid, Mingyu. It's arrogant and reckless and selfish."
His eyes narrow, something slipping behind them.
"You're mad because I drove on the edge," he says quietly. "But you don't get to be mad about why."
"I'm mad because you thought throwing it away would prove something."
"It did."
The words slam into me.
He takes a step forward, voice lower now, eyes locked to mine like we're the only two people in the goddamn paddock.
"I needed you to see what I am. Not the pretty parts. Not the press conferences and grid walks and champagne. This. The worst of it. The fear. The obsession. The part of me that chooses the edge because it's the only place I feel real."
My breath catches. His voice cracks just slightly.
"And I needed to know if you'd still be there after that."
I blink.
And blink again.
"You're insane," I whisper. "You're insane if you think you can weaponize my feelings against me like that."
His face doesn't change. "What feelings?"
I grit my teeth. My hands curl at my sides. I want to scream. I want to kiss him. I want to never see him again.
I step closer.
"Don't play dumb with me now, Kim."
He exhales a laugh, humorless. "You think I don't know what it meant, hearing your voice in my ears? Do you think I didn't feel it in my spine when you said my name like that? I've been begging you to say anything to me that wasn't soaked in venom, and now that you have, now that I've heard it—"
He cuts off.
I stare up at him.
He's shaking. Only a little. But it's there.
And for the first time since I met him... Mingyu looks scared.
"Mingyu," I whisper. "You could've died."
"I know."
"You could've—" My voice breaks. "You would've left me before I ever got to tell you..."
I clamp my mouth shut.
But he hears it.
God, of course, he does.
Like instinct, his hand lifts halfway to my cheek before he catches himself. Drops it. There's too much air between us and not nearly enough at all.
"You were everything I never wanted," I say quietly. "But then I saw the way you fight. The way you fly. And I hated you for it."
He steps forward again, barely a breath from me now.
"I've been in love with you since Spa."
I suck in a breath.
"You had grease on your cheek," he continues, "and fire in your eyes, and told me to stop smirking before you 'rearranged my entire goddamn personality.' I knew then."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"Because you'd spit it back in my face."
"I probably would've."
He laughs under his breath.
I can't look at him.
But I also can't not.
We're so close now, the crowd is fading again, and my heart is a war drum in my chest.
"I can't do this right now," I whisper. "Not here. Not like this."
"I know," he says softly.
And then, finally, he steps back.
The space between us is unbearable.
"Find me later," he says.
I don't answer.
But my heart's already chasing him down pit lane.
The second he's gone, the air collapses around me.
I don't move. Can't. I'm standing in the shell of a conversation that ripped more out of me than I want to admit, and all I can hear is what I didn't say.
I'm still catching my breath when I hear him.
"Rough night?"
I don't even have to turn around.
The accent. The smooth, condescending lilt. The casual arrogance I know too well.
Julius.
"What do you want?" I ask, voice flat.
He steps closer as if this is some kind of reunion. Like we've ever been anything other than a mistake born out of loneliness and distraction.
"You looked like you needed an out," he says, gaze flicking in the direction Mingyu disappeared. "Thought I'd offer one."
I finally turn to face him. His smug half-smile is already pushing every wrong button.
"I'm fine."
"You sure? Because you looked like you were about two seconds away from unraveling."
I roll my eyes and push past him.
He follows, of course.
"Touchy," he says with a laugh, matching my stride as I head for the stairs. "Is it because lover boy stormed off without a proper goodbye?"
I stop short.
"Don't call him that."
"Oh, come on," he scoffs. "The whole paddock's been buzzing. You think people haven't noticed the way he looks at you like he's already bled for you?"
My jaw tightens. "I'm not interested in gossip."
"No," Julius says, stepping in close, "you're just interested in fucking with people's heads."
I see red.
"Excuse me?"
"You reel him in, then you push him away," he says, calm and measured. "It's your favorite game, isn't it?"
I don't answer.
Because I don't owe Julius a single goddamn truth.
But that's when I feel it, that flicker at the edge of the garage. My head snaps up.
Mingyu.
Standing just across the paddock.
Watching.
For a split second, our eyes lock.
And whatever raw, unfinished thing we left between us, whatever shaky, hopeful tether we almost built, it snaps.
Because all he sees is this.
Me and Julius. Too close. Too familiar.
I can see it on his face the moment the assumption sinks in like poison.
I move.
Fast.
"Mingyu—"
But he turns.
Gone.
Just like that.
Shit.
I whirl back toward Julius, fury sparking behind my eyes. "Did you follow me out here on purpose?"
He raises his hands like he's innocent. "What? I saw a moment and took it. That's what you do, too, isn't it?"
"I'm not playing games."
"No," he says, cool and cruel. "But you are playing him."
I don't even realize I've shoved him until he stumbles back a step.
"You don't get to talk about him," I snap.
Julius straightens, brushing imaginary dust off his designer jacket.
"You always were more fun when you were angry."
I don't give him the satisfaction of another word.
I storm off, heart pounding, throat burning, brain screaming at me for letting Mingyu walk away thinking something I should've fought harder to stop.
⸻
I don't remember getting back to the hotel.
I remember the slam of the door behind me. The weight of my phone in my hand. The pressure building in my chest like something was going to break open if I didn't do something. I kicked off my heels somewhere near the closet, peeled out of the dress like it was choking me, and dropped onto the edge of the bed in nothing but a black slip and regret.
The image of Mingyu walking away wouldn't stop replaying in my mind.
That look on his face, like I'd confirmed the very thing he was always afraid to say out loud. Like I'd chosen wrong.
Again.
I grabbed my phone.
Can we talk?
No response.
Please.
Still nothing.
I stared at the screen until the texts blurred. My thumb hovered over the call button.
I pressed it.
It rang once.
Twice.
Voicemail.
I hung up before it could finish.
The party was still going downstairs, celebration rolling on without him, without me. Music echoed faintly through the walls, like a reminder that the rest of the world was moving and I wasn't.
I chewed the inside of my cheek, bouncing my leg, nerves sparking like faulty wires. Maybe I shouldn't go. Maybe he didn't want to see me. Maybe this was all one big, tangled mess I'd made worse.
But the part of me that chased him down pit lane wouldn't shut up.
I pulled on a fresh dress. Simple, black, low-cut and tied my hair back with trembling fingers. No makeup this time. No armor. Just me and whatever was left of this thing between us.
On the elevator ride down, I texted Jinho.
Is he there?
A pause.
Jinho: Rooftop. But... maybe don't push it tonight.
I stared at that for a long moment.
I'm already on my way.
The rooftop was quiet.
Not the romantic kind of quiet. Just cold, sharp, and a little too still. The skyline flickered in the distance, but all I could focus on was him.
Mingyu.
He stood with his back to me, elbows braced against the railing like he'd been standing there forever. His jacket was half-zipped, collar ruffled, and hair a mess. He didn't move when I stepped out.
He didn't have to. He knew it was me.
"I wasn't going to come," I said quietly.
Still nothing.
"But I needed to explain."
"You don't have to explain Julius," he muttered.
"I want to."
He turned slowly, his expression unreadable. Not angry. Just... closed off. Like a door halfway shut.
"He showed up out of nowhere," I said. "I didn't want him there. He said something, and I pushed him away. That's all it was."
Mingyu looked at me, jaw tight.
"I saw him touch you."
"I didn't touch him back."
"But you didn't pull away."
I took a step closer. "Because I was frozen. Not because I wanted him."
His stare didn't waver.
"I don't want him, Mingyu. I haven't for a long time."
"Then why is it so easy for you to run to everything that isn't me?"
That cut deep.
I opened my mouth, then shut it again. My heart pounded.
"You say I scare you," he said, voice low, almost bitter. "But you're the one who keeps turning away. I already told you how I feel. I stood there in the middle of a goddamn pit lane and told you I was in love with you. And you—" he shook his head, laughing once, without humor—"you just walked away."
"I didn't—"
"You didn't say it back."
I froze.
"You never do," he said. "You feel it, but you never say it. And I can't keep guessing, YN. I'm not asking for promises. I just want the truth."
I stared at him.
He stepped forward. Close. Closer than I could handle.
"Tell me," he said. "Tell me you don't feel anything, and I'll walk away."
I opened my mouth.
Closed it again.
He waited.
The silence stretched between us, unbearable.
"I can't," I whispered.
He stepped even closer. "Can't what?"
"Say it."
"Why?"
"Because if I say it—" my voice cracked, "then it's real."
"It's already real."
I shook my head. "It'll ruin everything."
"No," he said, voice rough. "It'll finally make it mean something."
My chest felt too tight. My breath was shallow.
He stared down at me, eyes blazing. "Say it, YN."
I shook my head. "I'm scared."
"I know," he said. "Say it anyway."
I blinked, eyes stinging.
He stepped in.
His hand found my jaw, thumb brushing the corner of my mouth like he was daring me not to hide.
"Say it," he whispered.
I couldn't.
So he kissed me.
Hard.
No hesitation. No room left for fear or reason or anything except him. His mouth was fire, his grip unrelenting, like he'd waited too long and lost too much to hold back now.
I gasped, and he swallowed it whole, one hand in my hair, the other curling around my hip. I clung to him like gravity, like his kiss was the only thing keeping me upright.
When we finally broke apart, breathless, his forehead pressed to mine.
"You don't have to be ready," he whispered. "Just be here."
I didn't answer.
I just took his hand.
His fingers curled around mine, warm and steady, like he didn't care that I hadn't said the words.
Like this was enough.
We left the rooftop in silence. No one stopped us. The hallway lights buzzed overhead as we moved past the closed doors, our steps too fast to be casual, too charged to be calm. My heart beat so loud I could barely hear the music downstairs anymore.
Mingyu hit the elevator button. The doors opened.
We stepped inside.
The second they closed behind us, I was against the mirrored wall, his mouth crashing into mine with a force that knocked the air right out of me.
There was no hesitation this time. No slow build, no delicate approach. Just teeth and tongue and hands everywhere. His fingers threaded into my hair, tugging my head back so he could kiss deeper, rougher like he was trying to erase the hours we'd spent apart.
"You don't know," he growled against my mouth, "how long I've wanted to touch you like this."
I moaned into him, hands gripping the front of his shirt, yanking him closer. "Then don't stop."
The elevator dinged.
He pulled away just long enough to drag me down the hallway, fingers tight around my wrist, not looking back once.
Room 1427. Keycard. Click.
The door shut behind us.
And then I was on the wall again, breathless, my dress hiked up around my waist, his thigh wedged between mine as he kissed me like he was starving.
I gasped as his hand slid under the hem of my dress, dragging up my leg, squeezing hard.
"You wore this for me?" he asked, voice low and wrecked. "This little thing with nothing underneath?"
"Yes," I breathed.
He groaned deep in his chest, mouth dropping to my neck as he bit, kissed, and licked across every sensitive inch of skin. My back arched. My fingers tangled in his hair.
"I need to see you," he murmured. "All of you."
I let him pull the dress over my head and toss it aside.
Then he stepped back.
And stared.
His chest rose and fell like he couldn't breathe.
"Fuck, YN," he whispered, eyes dragging down my body like he didn't know where to start. "You're so beautiful."
I crossed the room, took his hand, and placed it on my waist.
"Then touch me."
That broke him.
He kissed me again, slower this time, more controlled, but just barely. He peeled his shirt off, his skin warm against mine, muscles flexing under my palms as I traced over his chest, stomach, and waistband line.
He laid me down on the bed like I was something sacred.
Then covered me with his body, hands exploring every inch of me like he had to relearn it, memorize it, own it.
"Fuck," he murmured as he kissed down my chest, my stomach, lower. "I love you."
"Mingyu—"
"I know," he said. "I know."
He spread my legs slowly, reverently. Kissed the inside of my thigh, then again, higher, teasing. My breath hitched.
"You're already so wet for me," he said, voice like a prayer and a curse all at once. "I didn't even have to ask."
"You never had to."
Then his mouth was on me.
I cried out, hands flying to his hair as he licked deep and slow, fingers gripping my thighs to keep me open. His tongue moved with purpose, with practiced reverence, curling just right until I was shaking under him.
"Come for me," he murmured against me. "Let me feel it."
I broke. Loud. Unfiltered. And he didn't stop. Not until I was breathless and trembling, thighs still twitching around his shoulders.
He kissed his way back up my body, licking into my mouth like he could taste me on his tongue.
"Do you want me?" he asked, voice thick, eyes dark and wide. "Tell me."
"I want you," I whispered. "I want you so bad."
He fumbled out of his pants, cursing under his breath, and I helped him, fingers desperate, hands greedy.
When he finally pressed into me, slow and deep, I gasped.
So did he.
"God," he choked out. "You feel like fucking heaven."
We moved together like we were making up for lost time. His hips met mine with force, his hand gripping my thigh, the other holding my wrist to the bed as he fucked me.
Deep, intentional, raw.
Each thrust was a confession.
Each moan, a word I couldn't say.
"I love you," he groaned into my skin. "Even when you can't say it. Even when you push me away."
I whimpered. "Don't stop. Please."
"I'm not going anywhere," he said. "Not this time."
He moved faster, harder, our bodies slamming together in rhythm, the heat building, the pleasure blinding. I felt him everywhere, his breath on my neck, his hand in my hair, his heart pounding against mine.
"Come with me," he whispered, voice trembling.
"I'm—Mingyu—"
And then I shattered.
I came with a cry, clinging to him like a lifeline, and he followed, groaning my name, spilling into me with a shudder, his whole body pressed against mine like he was trying to crawl inside my skin.
When it was over, we stayed there.
Naked. Twined together. Breathing hard.
His forehead rested against mine.
"I'm still scared," I whispered.
He kissed me softly. "Me too."
"But I'm here."
His arms wrapped tighter around me.
"Good," he said. "Stay."
He shifted just enough to look at me, eyes searching mine like he wanted to believe it but couldn't let himself. Not yet.
"Stay," he said again, quieter this time. A plea. A promise.
I cupped his face with both hands, running my thumbs gently over the angles of his cheeks. His skin was warm. His lashes fluttered when I touched him like that.
"I'm not going anywhere," I whispered back. "Not anymore."
Something in him cracked then. I saw it happen.
His mouth crashed into mine, not desperate like before, but slow and deep. It was a kiss that felt like surrender. His hand slid into my hair, the other cradling my jaw, holding me like I was fragile like I mattered.
"I need you," he murmured between kisses. "Not just like that. I need you. All of you."
"You have me," I said, voice shaking. "You always did."
He rolled us gently, his body settling between my legs, and everything about him shifted. There was no rush. No urgency.
Only feeling.
He kissed me like I was the only thing that had ever made sense. Every inch of skin his mouth touched, he lingered. Worshipped. His hands mapped me like he needed to relearn me from scratch.
And I let him.
"I'm going slow," he whispered against my throat. "I want to feel all of it."
"Okay," I breathed. "I want that too."
When he finally entered me again, I gasped. Not from the stretch, but from the emotion of it. From the way his eyes locked on mine like he wanted to watch the moment he became a part of me again.
His hips moved gently, deeply, every roll of his body syncing with mine like we'd been built for this.
He kissed my cheek, the corner of my mouth, my shoulder, like he couldn't choose where to stay.
"You feel like home," he said, voice trembling. "I didn't know I could miss someone like this."
Tears stung my eyes.
I wrapped my arms around him, clinging to him, pulling him in deeper.
"I'm here," I whispered. "I'm so sorry I didn't say it before."
"Say it now."
My throat tightened. But I didn't look away.
"I love you, Mingyu."
His breath hitched. His thrusts stuttered.
I kissed the corner of his mouth. "I love you. I love you. I love you."
His forehead dropped to mine, eyes wet, breath shaky as he moved inside me, slow, our bodies rocking together like they were speaking in a language we finally understood.
The build was soft. Gradual. The kind that crept up on us until I was gasping his name into his mouth, nails dragging down his back as my orgasm hit with the weight of everything I'd held in for too long.
"Come with me," I whispered. "Let go."
He did, moaning my name like it was a prayer, hips pressing deep as he spilled into me, burying his face in my neck.
We stayed like that for a long time.
Breathing. Holding. Crying, just a little.
And when he pulled back, eyes red and raw, he kissed me again like I'd saved him.
"You mean it?" he asked quietly.
"I've never meant anything more."
He smiled,messy and perfect.
He kissed me again.
Softer now. Slower. Just warmth, breath, and the lingering weight of everything we couldn't say until now. His thumb stroked gently across my cheek as he pulled back, searching my eyes like he wanted to make sure I was still here.
I was.
And for the first time in a long time, I didn't want to be anywhere else.
He eased out of me with a soft groan, his touch careful—reverent, like he didn't want to hurt me after everything we'd just shared. I winced slightly at the sensitivity, and he was already moving, grabbing a warm towel from the bathroom.
"I got you," he murmured, kneeling beside the bed.
I watched him in the low hotel light. The way his brows furrowed in quiet focus as he cleaned me up, as he pressed a kiss to my thigh when he finished. He didn't say much. He didn't need to.
He slid back into bed behind me, pulling me into his chest like he was scared I might disappear if he let go. My head tucked beneath his chin, our legs tangled together under the sheet. His palm found the curve of my waist, and fingers splayed like he was claiming the right to hold me.
I let the silence settle.
Until I whispered, "What happens now?"
He exhaled slowly. I could feel it against my temple. His hand moved up, brushing hair from my face.
"I don't know," he said honestly. "I didn't think I’d ever get this far."
That made me smile. A small one. Tired. Real.
"I mean it," he continued. "I don't have a script for this part. For you. But I know what I want."
I looked up at him.
He met my eyes. Serious now.
"I want you," he said. "I want this. Whatever it looks like. But you have to know something."
I waited.
"This life. The races, the danger, the travel, it's not going away. It's who I am. It's what I've worked for my whole life."
I nodded. "I know."
"But I also know it scares you."
My throat tightened.
"You don't say it, but I see it every time I step on the track. You hold your breath like I might not come back."
"Because sometimes I think you won't," I whispered.
He didn't flinch.
"I get it," he said gently. "But I need you to be in this with me. Fully. Not halfway. Not with one foot out the door. I want you to be my person, YN. I want to come home to you. But I can't do that if you're always running."
I blinked hard. Swallowed even harder.
And then it broke.
The words, the weight, the years I'd held it in.
"My dad—" I started, voice cracking.
I felt him nod. Felt his lips press against the top of my head.
"You'll never go through that again," he said, voice firm. "I won't let you."
"You can't promise that," I whispered.
His hand cupped my cheek, gently turning my face toward him.
"I know," he said. "But I can promise this. I'll never stop coming back to you. No matter what. You're it for me."
I closed my eyes, tears slipping free.
He kissed them away. One at a time. Slow and steady.
"Stay with me," he whispered. "Be scared. Be messy. Be mad at the world. But stay."
I nodded, voice too broken to speak.
And he held me like he'd never let go.
Our bodies cooled. Our breathing evened. The city outside kept moving, but in here, it was just us. Safe. Bare. Real.
I buried my face in his chest and let the exhaustion take me.
And this time, I didn't dream of losing him.
I dreamt of staying.
